So, what exactly will be the point of buying a Jeep anymore? They really need to remove their heads from their collective orifices.

Well, consider that the current Liberty (KK) has pretty much the same underpinnings as our Libertys, which we consider to be worthy Jeeps. So, you cant go knocking the KK. But, for all the 4 wheel independent Jeeps... I dunno.

What I do know, is that if I was to get a new Jeep right now, there is no doubt that it would be a JK....

I read an article that the new wrangler was almost IFS and that it is a very real possibillity that the solid axle will go away.

i dont want to believe that that would happen, but i kinda do believe it. jeep is has not been using their heads correctly for a very long time. they need to realize that the ONLY reason people buy wranglers is for their image and ability. can you imagine how fewer wranglers they would sell if they went BACKWARDS in capability? the only reason the other jeep models have gotten away with it is because they're the more tame, grocery type models that 99% of people never off road. but the wrangler is a different story. honestly, the jeep brand does not make sense to be a full brand with more then one model at this point in time. vehicle MUST be more efficient and everything, but what it takes to do that totally ruins the wrangler. so, they should axe everything but the wrangler and make jeep a halo brand. done.

Some would argue that the WJ was actually the last truck-based Grand. I know fans of these vehicles believe 05 was the year the Grand Cherokee became car-based and had mourned it's death 3 years ago.

Jeep really has to take a look at itself, At one point they wanted to get rid of the wrangler. The reason my wife has a jk is when she was pregnant and she tes drove other vehicles she found the jk the most solid. :)

The Jeep lineup is starting to look pathetic. After 2010 what's left? Liberty and Wrangler....maybe?!?!

ya know what i would rather have then a car-based grand? a subaru. seriously. pretty much the same cargo space and such. i dont have any need for towing capacity and it will have the same or better all weather / dirt road abilities. if its a car, then get a wagon. better aerodynamics and probably better fuel economy. and i think the impreza 5-doors look cool.

Take it easy now, they do not say exactly what they mean by 'car based.' If you think about it every Jeep is car based except for the wrangler since they are a uniframe.

And what do you expect Jeep to do? Theyve got to do something to keep up with the times. They cant stay 100% jeep and survive in todays economy. The 5% of us that offroad would not keep Jeep afloat.

Not staying 100% Jeep is what will kill them. I believe the CEO said that himself. Jeep is the crown jewel for Chrysler and is the only division that WAS making a profit. If you start making Jeeps like the other cars and SUV's people don't want to buy, why will you be successful?

Toyota was successful with the FJ because they make good cars and trucks that people want. The new Cherokee based upon the Dodge Aspen will not be successful because people don't want a Dodge Aspen.

The best thing for Jeep right now is it gets sold off to a company that understands what a Jeep is and understands it's value.

thats why i said they should be a halo brand. kinda like hummer was with only the civilian hummer before the bling bling started. they wouldnt really have to worry about it because they would have a lower production capacity. there would be plenty of people still wanting to buy wranglers with body on frame and solid axles.

Yep, the Aspen should have remained where it belonged...a memory in the past when it was a station wagon with a slant six.

All in all though...how many true off-roaders buy new GC with the intention of wheeling a $30+K grocery grabber as it is currently. So is it going to hurt that an already tame vehicle (off-roadwise) is getting tamer?

If sales are slumping why make it the same as you other vehicles no one else wants? Jeep was making money the others were not. If the Grand can't sell, kill it, what's the point of stocking two models no one wants?

Going back to 1979 it was a thought.... http://www.offroaders.com/tech/jeep/ima ... 9proto.jpg

I think the 1997 Jeep Icon (a possible next generation wrangler)might have been IFS all around too

IFS can be good. HUMMVEE, (or however you spell it), desert buggies etc.

supply and demand... car manufactures will produce vehicles that the average Joe Shmo wants.. Off roadidng out of the box will be gone as we know it. Back to Old School if we want an off road Jeep we will have to bulid one. JK will be last remaining model worthy of of its Trade mark, and who knows what will happen to that. Depends on the Sales :(

Yep. Badge engineering has killed Detroit. Is Chrysler trying to kill the only profitable lineup they have? All of their recent models are sales disasters, except for the Jeeps and perhaps the Challenger.

Caliber (much larger than Neon, worse mileage, and goofy looking. A Toyota Matrix wannabe.)

Journey (to where, New Jersey? )

Nitro (why not just by a real Jeep Liberty instead of this 4000 pound low rider gansta wannabe? Badge Engineering at it finest, er worst.)

New minivan (functional and good execution. But it is bland and out of style, not selling like the old glory days).

Sebring (This is so ugly that driving it would cause an owner with an IQ over room temperature to commit suicide. The last model was much better looking.)

Avenger (Why? What did I do to them to deserve this thing? Ok, it is not too bad, just not very good either. )

When all your new models are coming straight off the sales lot at 30% off sticker and free gas offers-- and most are going to fleet rental-- you are in serious trouble.

At least the Patriot is good in all weather and somewhat useful. I would say the same for the Compass, but it is ugly and I hate the looks of it. But... believe it or not these two vehicles have been selling. Even better for Chrysler, they are stealing CUV buyers from Japan. Many Patriot/Compass owners are first time Jeep buyers. That is good for Jeep. Maybe they are thinking they can Honda Pilotize the GC and boost market share even more?

Isn't the Liberty car based? It has frame rails but it's still a uni-body...

Before passing judgement, lets just wait and see what happens.
