Post subject:  tiny rust spots

I washed the jeep yesterday and stood up on the tire to dry off the roof, only to find a whole bunch of little tiny rust spots all over the place. any idea what could have caused this? i dont remember them being there the last time i washed it....

after you did the roof lights did you clean the top REALLY good, little bits of metal can go over a large area with out you knowing , they cling to the paint if not waxed well and then kind of dig in and start to rust, clean the top really well and see how bad it really is, you may need to paint it soon!At this point at least get some good wax on it!
I think I would also try a small spot with rubbing compound to get that rust off and then wax and see what it looks like
could always bed line it!

Are you sure the rust is IN the paint or is it ON the paint?

If you think it may be on the paint then clay will bring it off.

If its in the paint then like tommudd said, those metal shaves could of etched themself in the paint and started to rust. More so if they were hot when they flew around.

yeah, i was thinking metal shavings too. actually, i cleaned it pretty good after the lights, but you have to drill two little holes in the roof rails to put that rene basket up there, and i think i neglected to clean it well after that. so, to answer jeepsters question, not sure if its "on" or "in", but i'll investigate more. thanks for the help.

yep, thought of that too. might sand off the rusty areas and spray it.

I would try detailing it good, clay bar etc and then see how it looks and go from there, it doesn't take many drill shavings to scatter over a large area.

So hows the Renny basket look by the way?

Seems like the perfect excuse to clean the rust and apply a lineX or rhino liner to the top of the roof. You can not officially use the "rust prevention" excuse.

KJ's looking GREAT Jerbacher!

I noticed a bunch of spots all over mine the 5th of July. It was junk from the fireworks that the neighbors shot off. I washed and waxed the jeep right away though. Not sure what it would have done if I didn't clean it off right away.

what it really needs right now is black fenders and bumpers. but, i'm investigating that and will probably be buying some leather dye soon, so we'll see what happens.
