Post subject:  LSD stuck?

Hey guys,

Recently got the diffs and transfer case serviced (LSD rear). I'm now having two issues. I'm getting some rear end noise and a clunky vibration through the seat when accelerating and turning from a stop (at stop-signs, lights, parking lots etc.). The truck also has a pronounced and immediate pull to the right upon hard acceleration. When you let off, you can feel the truck settle back down to the left.

Fluid level in the diff is good, and my mechanic swears that he added friction modifier.

What are the symptoms when your LSD starts to wear out? Any thoughts on whats going on here? For the pull to the right, could the long overdue tire rotation that I also got be causing this?

Thanks for any advice guys

I have had trac locks in some of my other jeeps and they seem to grab good after a fluid change. It goes back to normal after a while. I wonder if its changing the amount of oil on the disks and making them grab better? As they start to wear, the trac locks will grab less and less, until they act like an open diff. Rebuild kits are cheap. They suck to install.

Skipping or hopping around a corner is a sign that the rear tires are locked together at the same speed. A Limited Slip Differential is supposed to act as an open differential in turns to allow the outside axle to spin faster than the inner axle while in a turn. When the axles are locked together the outter tire can not spin faster and causes the inner axle to bind and hop to relieve the twisting on the shaft.

If this is something you are experiencing, than your mechanic did not put friction modifier in your rear diff and you are experiencing accelerated wear because the clutch surfaces are not soft enough to release like normal. I would really have the fluids re-changed and verify that there is the proper amount of FM in the rear axle.

Was this symptom present before the fluid changes? I'm not quite sure what would cause that at the moment.

As the clutch material disappears from the disk, the plates will just slip and spin freely returning your differential to a regular open unit as mentioned already. This is not the cause of your issues.

I'll bet they didn't add any LSD friction modifier. Happened to me as well, haven't let anyone service my car since.

You can get it at most autoparts stores, I think you need to add about 8 ounces.

Here's a dumb question: How do you know if you have an LSD. Mine acts like it does when I'm off road but it could just be the stupid ESP.

If both tires spin when traveling in a straight line (dirt road or wet pavement) then you have an LSD.

They didnt put Limited slips in the 2006 libertys since they have traction control.

If ESP is kicking on offroad then youre getting loose. Most likely your experiencing traction control and its very effective offroad.

I didn't think I had one. The traction control does work very well off road in the loose stuff but I understand that it strains and wears the braking system. I guess you have to take the good with the bad sometimes.
