GREAT article, he did a good job of explaining everything , a must for those who think a day out playing in the mud is so much fun but never stop to think what all is needed or about the clean up afterwards

Man do I hate cleaning up after mud. Somehow, though, I never think about the 2-3hour cleanup that will follow before I go through the mud.

Back 30 years ago I lived for mud, the more the better, but after all the cleaning, packing wheel bearings etc afterwards, etc. it kind of gets really old quick!
Thats why I have to laugh when I see some of these posts on here and know that in a few thousand miles they will have some problems due to NEVER cleaning properly after a run and checking everything really good.

Give me semi dry trails and rocks, hey maybe I should change my name to tomrocks

I have an el-cheapo electric powered ( & pretty low pressure) pressure washer that I use for clean-up after mud. It seems the playing around here consists of suck-your-rims-off mud are mud ruts dried so hard they are like concrete with hardly anything in the middle.

I have one of those electric power washers as well, does a pretty good job of cleaning up if you do it a day or so after you wheel. I still have some mud from my first trip with 1000 miles on it, see it every now and again and then forget to bust it out of there!

Yes, it was well written and the reason I posted it. Hopefully some of the Newbs will read it and think twice before venturing into mud holes. But then, they'll probably do it anyway and learn from experience like the rest of us.

I think it's just a part of wheeling, every one does it when they start it's just cool to have a muddy car. You grow out of it eventually.

Me? I still love the mud and gettin' dirty but I promise you the car wash is almost always my first stop on my way home!

you can say that again. the first hole we came to after crossing the tracks on the wellsville trip you went through.. and i decided to follow and fell off a unseen edge in the water/ice making it up to my windows almost on the drivers side. At that time i realized i was only in 2wd.. and later i learned you were locked front and rear with dieelec. grease packed everywhere. lesson learned

which is why both of our KJs are steaming here.. Image

Steam has nothing to do with dielectric grease... Cold water on hot engine = steam.

didnt say it did.. just said he was much better equipped to do it than i was (hence learning my lesson about not following people into unknown mud) and packing vitals with dielectric grease has a lot to do with keeping out liquid that could ruin important parts or cause your KJ to fail/not run.

KJ04, thanks for posting that. That article was written with good common sense, and good techniques, especially for a 4x4 noob like myself.

Like the author wrote, play in the mud, and eventually you will get stuck.

Btw; I have a gas powered heated power washer and can see myself using it more often than I have.

Ok. Just FYI the only thing I've ever had to put grease on were my coil seals.
