Post subject:  Help with buying a used Liberty

Hey everyone,

I am looking to buy a used liberty somewhere between 04-06. Can anyone give me feedback on problems, issues, watch outs, etc. etc. that someone looking to buy a Liberty should know?

THanks,
Justin

That's a little bit of a loaded question. It really depends on how you want to use the Jeep. Can you give us a little more info so we can give you good advice? I'm sure everyone here would be more than happy to help.

Probably a good point... It is for my girlfriend. All on road action, might see snow but I completely doubt it. Maybe off-road once a year but for the most part, just a dalily driver. Thanks!

Look for one with the Full Time 4wd and factory LSD. It's really nice to have your choice of 2wd, FT4wd, PT4wd, and 4wdLow. This combo will get her through anything the streets will offer as long as she has decent tires. The stock tires are usually terrible. Make sure you upgrade them for her. The 04-06 KJ's have a 42RLE transmission which isn't as strong as the 45RFE in the 01-02 and some 03's, and doesn't hold a gear as well in the hills. It does get better gas milage at interstate speeds though because of the overdrive gear. The CRD has a 545RFE which is a very good tranny, but it has a piece of junk torque converter. There are upgrades to fix that though. Make sure you check out the ball joints up front. There can be problems there. Also check the radiator. Pinhole leaks can form on the top corner of the driver's side. Tends to cause coolant to get on the battery terminals and corrodes them very quickly. Make sure the AC is cold. The condensers tend to get leaks near the mounts and that's an expensive fix. In all, the Libbies are pretty reliable. I'm sure some others will chime in with things to check that I'm not thinking of right now though.

No such thing as a 2001 Jeep Liberty, the first model year was 2002.

If you look at the door sticker, there were Liberties built in 2001 though, and they have the 45RFE. Mine's an '02 model, but I bought it in July of '01.

Actually they started building KJ's in March of 2001 but they where all model year 2002.All company's start making/selling the next model year up to 9 months before that actually year that the vehicle is labeled for.Whole new platforms like the KJ(replacing the XJ) was released early so as to fix some of the first run bugs before full production was started.

Not really sure why you're calling me out on this. I know that the first models are 02's. Just trying to keep it simple for him if he's looking at the door tags to see when it was built.
