On my drive to work this morning I heard a ‘thumping’ sound coming from my front end. It could be heard at speeds about 40MPH. It wasn’t pulling to either side but I thought maybe I have a flat, pulled over and no flat. I’m thinking my CV joints are in need of replacement. I’ve done no recent wheeling. What are the signs that your CV joints (axle) is going out? (No torn boots) and what are the signs your axle half-shafts are going out? I've got about 115K miles on it.

A major warning sign is when a CV starts to make a clicking or ticking noise when turning.

Check for missing wheel weights?

No clicking or ticking or clancking noise when turning just THUMP THUMP THUMP.... Missing wheel weights?? Intresting, I'll check that, if all weights are there what else could it be? I'm hoping it's a simple fit.

If it were missing a wheel weight then you would probably get some vibrations at certain speeds.

If it were thumping I would think you had a belt coming apart in one of the tires.

Ok, checked the wheels and no weights missing and the tires they look fine. I'll see if I still here it on my home.

Check the lugs.

Could try rotating the tires too. If it goes to the rear then something is wrong with one of those tires.

I got the same noise when the C-clip on the inner stub shaft on the passenger side went out. I thought the same thing about the flat tire, and got out immediately to check. Check it soon, and don't drive on it if possible. I did for about 3 days and it wore the splines off the stub shaft and ended up costing me about 1100 in parts and labor. I'm almost certain thats what it is.

A good way to check is to jack up the front end to get the tires off the ground and spin by hand to see if you can see if the CV shaft wobbles where it connects to the stub shaft.

Here is a video of what mine looked like...

does it shake the vehicle when driving?

On the drive home last night I heard no noise. I checked the lug nuts. Lifted the Liberty took a close look underneath and found nothing. On the drive this morning no noise either. I’m perplexed; over the weekend I’ll remove the front tires and check everything again. Could it possibly be a hub?

The hub would constantly make noise. After you check everything out over the weekend, maybe go for a longer drive and see if the noise or vibration develops. It possibly was just a fluke.

Have you considered your front driveshaft? It would be pretty easy to remove it and drive without it for a couple days to see if the sound goes away.

Thanks for the responds. The noise is gone. I looked everywhere is nothing seems to be “malfunctioning”. Hopefully it was just a fluke and it won’t bite me later on.

Bingo!

I was going to reply with my comments on the frong DS.
Mine has done that a few times, then no noise. Then all of the sudden at 55MPH there it is.

I would take it out and take the KJ for a walk and try to hit high speeds.
More than likely, you might have a DS going bad.
