| Post subject: | My first JEEP. 2 Questions. |
This is my first JEEP that I've ever owned so let me ask all you veterans. 1) I have a 2002 LE. When I shift out of drive into N or P it's like it releases this big bind on the drivetrain. It seems a bit much to me but I'm used to Chevys. Is this normal. 2)There seems to be a good bit of slack in the drivetrain. Is this normal. |

you probably have the 45rfe tranny, only comes in the 2002's. That is perfectly normal for those trannys to do that |

Good. Thanks, that's what I was hoping. I bought mine from a dealer with an extended warranty. They told me there Tech's went through the whole vehicle. It's just different than what I'm used to. |

The releaes of "pressure" does not sound normal. That is unless you are putting the vehicle in park on a incline. The slack is very normal however. |

But to much slack is not normal. If you can move your rear driveshaft more then about a 20 degrees(KJ off and in park) you have severe wear in the tranny,t-case,or the rear diff and is not good. |

Are you using the parking brake when parking? |

Yeah I use the parking brake every time I park out of habit. I haven't parked on an incline in quite a while. When I park, I do this: 1)Firmly press service brakes until stopped. 2)Place transmission into park. 3)Pull firmly on parking brake. 4) Release service brake. From how I understand how auto trannies work this method should never leave my parking pawl in a bind. But remember from my first post, the problem is when shifting out of drive, not park. It shifts from park smoothly. It's kinda seems like there's to much torque while idling in drive. I guess the only way to be sure is bring it back to the dealer. I did buy an extended warranty. It's just a hassle I've been putting off in case I could have gotten the "warm and fuzzy" from this forum. But if nobody else with 2002's have this problem then it looks like I need to take it in as soon as possible. |

I got under there and checked and it seems like it only moves 15 maybe 20 degrees.(guessing) I guess I had just better get the dealer to check that too. |
