Post subject:  KJ Supplementary tow harness

Hello.

I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty.

When I purchased the car, it had no overhead console and a 4 way towing plug.

I purchased and installed EVIC and it works perfectly.

Now I want to upgrade the 4 way tow plug to a 7 as I'm getting a boat and need brakes.

Does it mean that I have to buy the 7 way harness and the supplementary harness even though I have installed the EVIC myself?

I'm confused as to what this extra harness does. Is it for breaks?

thanks for the help. Great forum

whats the overhead EVIC have to do with trailer wiring harness? :? Time to rewire and install a 7 wire harness. You can always get the 4 straight adapter if needed.

There are two types of trailer brake systems:

1) Surge brakes - these rely on a sliding reciever (on the trailer) to activiate the brakes when the vehicle starts to slow down. They work OK but not the best

2) Hydraulic brakes - these require that you have a 7 pin harness and a brake controller. The blue wire of the harness powers the system and helps stop the trailer. These are the way to go IMO. Especially if you are pulling a trailer that is over 3000 pounds...

Buy the factory Tow harness from a place like jparts.com (you don't need the EVIC)

You can keep the flat 4pin connector and get a 4 to 7 pin adaptor. It has a harness on it to let you wire in the electric brakes, battery, etc.

Check out etrailer.com, I bought two from there and use them.

The evic comes into play with the Jeeps actual wiring harness. If you have the evic you should have a wire ran to the back for the electric brake. Not sure if it changes anything else.

if the EVIC is there - then an extra part of the wiring harness is there
There's a really good writeup in jeepkj country - but the server won't talk to me right now -
I'll try to add the link later

so what the he77 is a EVIC?

and how hard is it to wire up the 7 pin harness if you have no wiring at all?

EVIC is the acronym form Electronic Vehicle Information Center. A.K.A the overhead console that displays temperature and fuel mileage.

That write up was fantastic.
