Post subject:  Rear Gate unexplainably locked, interior lights stuck on

I'm having some intermittent strange problems. On saturday, I got out to my jeep in a parking lot, and the rear gate would not open. I mashed the lock/unlock button a number of times, but pulling the handle would only open the flipper glass, no matter what I did. By time I got home it worked fine, so I will call it a one-time thing....

The next day I notice that when I start her up and start driving, the interior lights don't go out. The EVIC doesn't say that any of the doors are open, and clicking the lights off doesn't turn them off. Turning off the ignition and back on again fixed it, so I'm not particularly worried.

But yeah, anyway, these aren't things I'm particularly worried about, unless they happen again, but has anyone seen this sort of behavior? I should note that this is a 2005 renegade with ~12k miles.

I have found that if you click the rear light on or off it will affect all of the lights. You may have to play with it to figure out what it is doing. As far as the gate staying locked...can't really help you there since even when I click the button for the glass on the remote it still unlocks the gate.

So far it was a one time thing, and turning the ignition off and back on again without touching anything else fixed it. It was very strange. I'll have to investigate further if it happens again, but I'm really not sure that any amount of looking around will help me figure out what caused it.

yeah, it was very strange. You know how there's two ways you can pull the handle? You pull it so that the handle moves, and the glass flips up, and if you pull it harder, the whole door opens AND the glass flips up? Well, I pulled on it, and only the glass came up. Kept pulling, nothing. Put the glass down, popped it back up, locked doors, unlocked doors, many iterations. Finally decided to just load the back through the open flip glass, problem fixed itself by time I got home.

My best guess so far is that it has something to do with the auto-locking above X mph when driving. Maybe it somehow got stuck in the locked mode, so no amount of locking/unlocking doors was going to fix it....until I drove away and hit that magic speed, which reset it again.

Did you try unlocking with the remote or the switch. Either way that is strange. Your right about the auto-lok it probably got stuck.

I had the tailgate issue, it turned out to be a linkage that fell off. The dealer fixed it for me, but I think you have to remove the plastic on the tailgate and hook up the linkage again.

Was your rear wiper on? On my 02 the rear wont open if the rear wiper is on. As for the lights, the same thing happens to me and all I did was click the light in the back.

Linkage and rear wiper are good suggestions.

Note: if it's the power lock being somehow held to LOCK, that's bad. It could drain your battery or short circuit if it's truly in the lockING mode.

The only time I've seen the backglass unlocked/swinging gate locked is when I open the driver's door (which I have programmed to unlock "all" doors) after all doors have been locked (whether through 15MPM autolock, or by locking with keyfob). Unlocking doors with this method unlocks all the door locks and backglass lock, but leaves my swing-gate locked. Hitting the "unlock" button on my keyfob (which I have programmed for single-tap "unlock all" access) fixes it for me when it happens. Hitting the "unlock" button on the driver's door also unlocks it for me.

The rear wiper also keeps my rear swinggate and backglass locked. There is no way (that I know of) to open the rear swing gate or backglass without turning off the rear wiper (which makes perfect sense considering the rear glass would collide with it if it weren't "retracted" back onto the gate). Not saying that your rear wiper was on, but it's a sensor that, if faulty, could potentially keep the rear door from opening.

I've only manually turned on that rear light one time. Can't report any problems, but I'll keep an eye out.

Personally, I'd have it in the service bay. Dead batteries due to faulty sensors are not my idea of a pleasant outing.

How do I program my remote to unlock all with one tap?

Adam, don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll try to make this short...

I used the EVIC, but according to the manual:

(Keyfob)
1. Press and hold the "Unlock" button on the transmitter
2. Continue to hold the "Unlock" button, wait at least 4 but no longer than 10 seconds, then press the "Lock" button
3. Release both buttons
4. Repeating steps 1-3 will restore original operation

Going through the EVIC I selected "Auto Unlock On Exit: YES" and "Remote unlock: All doors." I'm spoiled by both these settings. Auto unlock on exit only becomes an option if "Auto Door Locks" feature is turned on. The remote unlock all is accessed by pressing "step" when either "Driver's door 1st" or "All doors" is displayed.

I hope this heps Adam (and anyone else who wanted to know). It's all I can offer in return for those cool movies your sig linked me to. Had to show those to my girlfriend so she could see why I put all those lifting/armoring Jeep accessories on my Christmas list this year!

Oh, right! I forgot all about that in the EVIC. I did this a while back and it screwed up my aftermarket alarm and how it interfaces with my remote! I have an aftermarket alarm that is activated by the stock keyfob because it's wired to the auto locks. For some reason, it must stay on the two stage (driver's door first) setting so that the two systems play nicely together!

Silly me.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed my movied. It's now been downloaded over 1,700 times! Let's see, if everyone paid me $5 for each viewing... :P

I like the "one push only unlocks the driver's door - 2 push unlocks all" mode. If I'm in a bad area I like to be able to unlock only the driver's door so I know no one can snatch open one of the other doors as I get in.

How about:
one tap = unlock all
two taps = deploy offensive secutiry system (attach dog of choice)
three taps = deploy defensive secutiry system (shotgun and/or handgun of choice)
Haven't seen this option on the EVIC yet, but with a couple small modifications.... ;-)

Se7enLC - Tried messing with the manual activation of the rear light and can't replicate. Let us know if it happens to you again and (if you take it to service) what caused it.
