Post subject:  Hood Vents

I see where a couple of people have installed vents in their hoods - Do these vents work well? I'm not crazy about vents that look "stuck on", although I'm thinking if I painted them to match, they might look better? Anyway, where can I find these vents?

On a side note, I have a friend whose father builds original steel hot rods and have seen some of the custom fabrications he has done cutting louvers into sheet metal, and was thinking maybe this would be another way to go. It would most likely be original on a KJ. Of course I would have to drive around without my hood until the job was finished.

As for louvers. this is what I was referring to;

I know TJKJ2002, Tommud, 03kjsport, and myself all run louvers. Mine are Gen Right, TJKJ's are Run Cool I think and the other two fellas are off pontiacs or something. It is pretty amazing to feel the heat that floods out of the hoods. I love mine. Poison Spyder makes some as well. I measured mine out, drilled a hole and used a jigsaw to chop the hood metal and then they are held in by rivets.

Have a friend who has an old style hood louver press and he does street rods/ etc as well, I looked at that route but taking all the bracing out of the KJ hood would leave a very thin piece of metal to work with, don't think it would be worth the effort. Lots of difference between the metal in a 32 Ford hood and a 2004 KJ hood

Not being a smart *** here   but Why does everyone think thats a problem? You drive down the road when its raining and water gets thrown up on the motor, you wash down the Jeep and also the engine spraying down the engine, you drive through creeks/ streams and get water up on the engine.

So no does not hurt a thing, quite a few cars come with them stock from the factory, although they come with trays underneath but still ...

So to answer the question NO problems at all with water

I think about it from the stand point of when the vehicle is parked in a pouring rain and the water is going under the hood directly into electrical components like possibly the alternator. I know I avoid getting that what when washing down the motor. On that note how about some links to where I can buy these vents from.

holes cut out ready to install

they look like they stick up higher than what they really do, from a distance you can not really see them and most people think they are factory cause they blend in so well

What is the best way to cut the hole?? Did you run any type of silicone around them? What size are the Pontiac hood louvers?

I'm thinking of getting these:

http://www.genright.com/ProductInfo.asp ... id=LVR1006

Are they too long? 15.5" x 4"??

I traced mine on the hood with a dry earse marker and then drilled 3/8" holes in the corners and used a jig saw to cut along the lines and I painted where I cut to prevent any rust, no silicone I have very little water get into the engine compartment b/c of the louvers

and the best way to see if they will look good is get some cardboard and cut it to the same size and lay them on the hood and see if you like it

best way to cut... drilled four corner holes and then used a jig saw, no problem at all. I also taped the whole hood off so I didn't mess up the paint or get metal shavings all over the hood, also made the layout easier
The GTPs are the 5 louver the 9s are too long, mine are about 15 1/4 for reference. Marty (Rock Lizard) told me to use black roof cement , hes ran some of the same one (GTPs) with only that hoding them on for years. I used the original bolts also that are underneath PLUS the roof cement, they will never come off

I looked at fabricated ones, but I went cheap!

jeepkj02, those are the ones I bought, but I bought the 3 pack with the wide one as well as the 2 long ones. I have a flat hood on my KJ Renny so I don't know exactly how they would work down the middle of the rounded hoods. You may need to cut holes like TJKJ did in his hood support beams to allow the air to pass through. But I imagine they should work fine.

How I did mine:

I measured everything out to where all 3 of my louvers were going to go. Marked them with a wax pencil and then taped off about 3" around my outlines to prevent the saw from scratching my hood. Then drilled a hole big enough for the jigsaw blade to fit in and cut the outlines I had premarked. Place the louvers in the holes where I cut and drilled the holes for the rivets. I painted the cut edges to help prevent rusting and then riveted the the louvers in place. Took around 30 to 45 minutes total.

Seeing these vents in detail as you've shown here actually convinced me they do look really good on the hood, and not "stuck on" as I previously thought.

Also, fwiw, I was thinking of having the louvers cut into the center recessed valley (if you will) only. From the windshield down about half-way, if that far.

Thanks Mike for those links. I just may go this route using vents.

can the guy you know get the hood on his machine to punch in the louvers, my buddys you couldn't , tried with a junk KJ hood, would of had to remove the inner structure and then reattach, too much work

Not sure? At this point it was only a thought (on my part) knowing he does this type of fabrication.
