Post subject:  Tension pulley

I've noticed recently that several people have thrown their tension pulley. Is this a widespread problem or am I imagining things? If you did throw the pulley, how many miles did you have at the time?

My 04 Limited just had the pulley replaced, it happened at about 41,000 miles. The spring went.

Mine went at about 110,000Khms. The pully seized and twisted off, even lost the belt. The replacement is making noise, "ticks", drives me nuts.

I lost mine at 36000 miles. I was coming back from the Mid-Atlantic Fall Krawl and was towing (GO FIGURE) a broken YJ. Pulley went and the dash went crazy!

Question: When your spring breaks on your pully and all of your dash lights turn on is your KJ still drivable to get to a shop. Or does this make your belt come off right away.

your belt may come off, or it will just slip and get shredded. W/o tension, the belt will nut pull the water pump correctly, and you could overheat, then there is the power stearing and alternator (thus all the lights)

My advice, do not drive it, when mine went, and the waterpump went at the same time, said the belt caused the waterpump damage due to catching the clutchfan, I would not drive it, mine took only a minute to overheat... but I was hauling a trailer up hill too..

Dang that is a lot of comas huh? well here are a few more,,,,,,,,,,,,

So that being said, I wonder if it wouldn't be a bad Idea to carry a spare pully along with my spare belt. It seems like this is a problem, and I would hate to be hours on a trail and something simple like a pully go out.
