So I was coming home from bestbuy a few minutes ago and decided (In my superior 16 year old wisdom) to mess around on the ice on the road. We had just pulled into my neighborhood so I figured that the worst case scenario was that I ended up in somebody's front yard and had to fix it for them. Well I gave it a little extra gas coming around a corner and the back end slid completely out then got grip and shot me straight into the grass in front of me. Unfortunately, this grass was on a 45 degree angle straight into a pond about 10 feet away.

I was able to get the KJ stopped about 3 feet from the water, and somehow managed to back out in 4Lo and drive away.

The moral of the story: Don't mess around on ice. :(

would always find a desert parking lot to play around on the ice.that way at the first of the year you would know what your vehicle would do on ice and how it would handle in a skid.when you did get in situation, you would know where you would go.especially on a new vehicle that you dont know well yet.

Ahh yes...16 year old wisdom. I remember when I used to know everything too.
Do what crdawg said and take your vehicle to a deserted place. Do it in every kind of weather. When it rains make a stop at that parking lot and feel your vehicle out. The same when it snows and also if the sky is falling. I would like to know what the KJ handles like in that situation.

Don't go crazy, you can still dork things up for your self, even in a parking lot.

Well I definately have been to a parking lot before for some snow fun  .. I just won't screw around on the road ever again.

I'm going to feel my way straight to tire kingdom to get rid of the crapyears though.

Dude man ... I don't want to read about you on Darwin :D

Anyhow, there's a point to get to know your vehicle. I took my wife's KJ on some gravel roads to get to know how it handles. That practice session came in handy recently when I fishtailed my KJ for real in Death Valley.

You have snow, Im kinda jealous, My infinite 18 year old wisdom tells me to do things too, like takin adventures through interesting trails through peoples unused land thinking " hey I dont see any no trespassing signs, or private property signs, so whats the worst that could happen" only to get chased out by angry land owners, and armed hunters, thankfully I watch a healthy anount of Dukes of Hazard

dukes of hazzard really has no place in real life...If you get chased off of property-remember that cornfield is someone's living and how they put food on the table. People irresponsibly using land is why we have trail closures. Yes I am a big Dukes fan. No I am not some old man. I am 18 and I am no angel but I stick to designated trails and my own property to save my, your's, and our reputation. Wheel responsibly and we will have places to wheel in the future.

About those deserted parking lots ... keep an eye out for those light poles stuck in big concrete pillars. Amazing how they can sneak up on you.

Yeah, it happened to a "friend", OK?

Dont' froget to check the parking lot for the following:

Curbs
Pot Holes
Light Poles

You don't want to go ripping off a tire / rim while you are practicing your skid recovery technique's.

I did something similar when I was 16 in my cherokee. But unfortunally I hit another car. Learned my lesson the hard way. Yes going to a deserted place to practices control is a great thing to do.

When doing that sort of thing in a car, the worst case is hitting some yard....When you throw a jeep/suv into the mix, you all of a sudden have a high chance of rolling. Sharp turning (like when you're sliding on ice and all of a sudden catch traction) is when she'd be likely to roll....you're lucky you only hit grass and pond and not pavement.

Just explain to them what you are doing and they will probably be cool. Not sure what the laws are in your state, but if the parking lot is private property (most are) there is not much they can do with out the owner becoming involved.

Ice. I stay away from it as much as I possibly can. I hit a patch of ice on an off ramp and did a complete 360 abou 10 years ago. Freaked me out of my ever loving mind.

I've had my fair share of that too haha. I actually went to the guy who owned the place where I usually go recently though and asked if it was okay to use his land for that purpose, and his response was: "Well it's fine with me but you might want to come back after january first because right now there are hunters on the property instructed to shoot out your tires if you're seen on the property." Haha glad I asked.

Ah... youth! Looks though as you learned a lesson and might see your next birthday.

However, as others have pointed out, courtesy towards your fellow man is a virtue. Your actions do have consequences. Sliding through someones front yard, possibly smashing through the wall of an occupied house... injuring, maiming... possibly killing someone... things to think about before doing.

Reminds me of the night a drunk driver turned down my street by mistake, bouncing off cars parked on the street only to come crashing into my front yard, headlights piercing my bedroom window at 2:00 am in the morning. By the time I found a pair of sweats and grabbed my .45ACP, he fortunately had backed out of my yard and was careening down the street tearing up vehicles as he went. When the cops caught up with him, they told him he was lucky... that a pissed off and armed homeowner wanted to weigh him down with a little bit of lead... not to mention all the owners of the cars he had damaged.

Ya hear that...so don't mess around in the streets and just be careful and think about what you are going to do before you do it.

I already went back and fixed the guy's yard that I ended up in so no worries there. I'm not the kind to run away when I mess something up.

I understand the point though
