Post subject:  need a picture of the rear gate plastic cover off

There has to be a picture somewhere when someone had the inside plastic cover off. I have a new plan and just need to see what it looks like. Yes I am TOO LAZY to go out and do it myself

Looking at making a drop down work table on the door. Have it mocked up in my head...12/14 inches deep , 3/4 of the way across the gate.

Just came back from the parts store and this "kid" was trying to replace a master cylinder on his Wrangler with no tools at all hardly, he had never done it before etc, so helped him bench bleed it and replace it.

But just thought then it would be neat to have a small work bench back there for times like that or camping. He is the one who suggested it since he thought I had every tool ever made in the back, he said "all you need is a work bench now. Really got him when I pulled the vise out

any pictures or ideas????

I seem to remember a pic of that somewhere. Might have been on jeepkjcountry. As I remember it, you'd have to weld in a lot of new steel to support a work bench. Although, since you'd be welding anyway, may as well reinforce the hinges, then it'd be darn cool, imo. Take lots of pics, so I can copy, you when you do it.

would the gate hold a hi-lift and an axe? i might think of having someone weld some tabs or bolts on so i can put the hi-lift and axe on there...
the skin would be off ofcourse!

They barely hold a 31" tire. Can't see them holding 40-50lbs of steel for long.

I dont see why not, I have my axe on the tailgate, and the hi-lift isnt as much as a wheel and tire

Incubusmike has fabricated a Hi-Lift jack mount on the spare tire carrier. I have seen it in person and I am working on a "no weld" method of mounting it there. I'll post picks if it works. Here's the link to mike's build:

One of my tires weight (mounted) 70 pounds, maybe a bit more, I don't remember exactly. No problems.

I've stood on my spare tire and I'm about 190. It still felt sturdy, but it was just for a second, I wouldn't want to push it.

You have to remember that everything bounces around back there when you're moving and any additional weight will amplify the forces stressing where the spare mounts to the gate.

BTW, the inside of the gate, with the interior panel removed, is covered by one large piece of black plastic, that self adheres around the edges. I guess its for sound proofing or weather proofing.

I fixed that heavy tire on the tailgate issue,
:? :? :?

I went to one of those places that sells ballons and had them fill up my spare

I just have to watch now when I unbolt it that it doesn't float away

Ok back to serious stuff

THANK YOU HYPER!!!!!!! Thats what I needed ,

ok it will work, enough to mount to, now for a the build, will not have to hold a lot of weight, maybe 5 to 10 lb at most , but now I know what I am working with before I tear into it and my wife askes what I am tearing up next

Just use a fold-up leg system to support the non-hinge side of the work bench. It's what we do in our cube vans at work. The leg folds away with the table, and gives it added strength and stability when in use. Just use wood or something with steel entry door hinges or something similar. You would have a rock solid work bench. Maybe even a variable length foot at the bottom of the leg that you can turn to make it shorter or longer depending on the terrain.

That's my 2 cents.

Also would love to see pictures when you are done
