Shaking steering wheel

All,

Good morning. Got a question - what would cause my steering wheel to shake at highway speeds? The Jeep does not shake only the steering wheel. I recently got it aligned and new tires went on it yesterday but still it shakes. What could it be? Thanks in advance.

have your front end checked.

IE tie rod ends.

What year/how many miles?

Could be a bent wheel

Rotors/discs might be warped.

Most probable cause and easiest thing to check is tire balance. You probably through a wheel wieght or have extra mud or dirt caked on the rim.

Thanks for all the input! I have ruled out tire balance and alignment. Brake rotors could be warp - I have had dried mud jammed in the cooling vents for a while. As far as the tie rod goes, how can I determine if it/they are bent? Thanks in advance.

They won't be bent, the ball sockets will be worn.

Have you checked the fluid level in the PS reservoir? Not really sure if that would cause a shimmy in the wheel and I'm sure it's the first thing you looked at but... well, ya never know.

Also another guess that I'm gonna ask the other pro's to interject their thoughts on: Could it be the rack bushings? I would think that would cause the Jeep to wander quite a bit.

wander, yes, shake, no.

If it was a brake rotor, it would only be under braking, not just cruising o nthe highway.

I have the same issue,and i have worn lower balljoints.2 sets of recall @ 85,000 miles.Monday putting MOOG serviceable in I'll keep ya posted...........

lower balljoints will not cause a vibration either.

tie rod ends and wheels, or anything else that rotates. but as far as a steering wheel shake, that's about all that will cause it.

OP, how many miles on your rig?

Good morning and thanks for the input. Sorry for the lack of details in my question. My KJ is an '06 with ~33000 miles on it. The strange thing about the steering wheel shaking is that its the only thing shaking. If you take you hands off the wheel you feel nothing. Another strange thing is that it does not show up until everything "warms up". First think in the morning I pull onto the highway and there is no shaking. A few miles down the road it shows up. Any thoughts.

To check your tie rod ends, jack the one front tire up (by the LCA), and move the wheel/tire as if you were shaking it. And see if your tie rod moves, you can see it through the rim.

I had a bad shimmy in the wheel at about 60-65 mph. I had recently put on 2 used front tires. They were balanced fine when they were installed but the shimmy disapeared when I changed to Revos.
