Post subject:  Car battery charger?

I have a yellow top deep cycle in the CJ thats dead. I spent a good hour with jumper cables going between the KJ and the CJ and got enough juice to get the cj to pretend like it was turning over.
I's rather not spend $150+ on a new battery... Can the battery be recharged? Anyone have any experience with something like this?

Sorry I know not.

I have heard that the best portable jump starter is the Black and Decker...Simple Start I think it is called but I have not tried that little bugger either.

You can "shock" the battery back into service,as long as a cell didn't go dead. But you will need a high amp charger, over 200amps is better,500amps would be best.Make sure the charger is rated to recharge Optima's since most chargers are not.

those high amp chargers are almost as much as a new battery

since I was able to get some small charge going w/the jumpers can i assume the cell is still alive?

would a auto parts store ( think pepboys? ) do recharges?

Your Optima has 6 seperate cells.

See the second pic I posted to see if your Optima is saveable.

Another option, is to go the other extreme: You get a charger that will charge at a rate of approx. 2 amps/hr., and charge it until it has reached 20% of the charge i.e., if it is a 100 amp/hr. battery, you charge it for 10 hours, at 2amps./hr., THEN charge it at the normal rate of 5, 10, or 20 amp hrs.

I cannot remember WHICH deep cycle battery site I was on which recommended it - (possibly Optima, I don't remember, but I do a lot of fishing, so I've been on a LOT of sites, researching what deep cycle battery to get in the 1st place).

In any case, although I can't remember the particulars on WHY it is preferable to use a trickle, when you've deep-discharged a battery, the fact remains - it can't hurt, so it's worth a try. :)

Good luck!

p.s. DON'T forget to get a charger rated for spiral-cell batteries
