if you have the choice, would you go the warn M8000 or the XD9000?

Cost not an issue, go for the XD9000. Why not if cost isn't an issue?

The XD9000 would be my choice, but the bigger question is what are you going to mount it to? ARB? If so, then I would go with the 9.5XP
:D :D :D

If cost is not an issue, I'd get this:

price is somewhat an issue, but i wouldn't go that far with the winch... just under those powerplants!

The 9.5XP will fit perfect in an ARB 8)

i just bought a smittybilt 10,000lb winch came to $389.00 (with controller, roller fairlead, hook) :D it should fit snuggly in an ARB and all the reviews i've read are nothing but positive.

This past Sat I installed a M8000 in my ARB and it fits great! Looks good and I even played a little with it, so far very impressed by the unit. For good prices on it check out 4wd.com it is cheaper than quadratec, not sure how the shipping/customer service is though. Quadratec was very good with my winch, I had to replace it, it came missing parts originally.

Shipping and customer service is great at 4wd.com.

Remember that an electric motor can only do the work the supply allows it to. It doesn't matter what the winch is rated for, when voltage sags below 12V (and it will), it sags for Warn, Smitty or "Bob's House of Winches". Build is a sperate argument, but work to be done is dictated by supply not the manufacturers spec.

So are you saying that with a winch, a high output alternator would also be a wise investment?

a good battery is something to get and make sure it isnt getting low, I dont think you would really need to get a higher alternator unless you plan on using your winch a lot

Optima Yellow Top would be your first answer. Then you need to consider that most electric winches come with either a permanent magnet (PM) motor or a series wound (SW) motor. Your cheaper winches come with the PM motors and only draw somewhere between 10-15% fewer amps than the heavy duty SW motors. However, PM motors are weaker and can't handle lots of heat. In addition, PM motors are known to lack power in cold weather.

Build is not a separate argument, it is the bases for the argument. For example, motor power combined with line speed and gear ratio can make a difference when selecting a winch. This is why Warn makes so many types of winches. Every application is different, therefore finding the right type of winch is important. Part of this process is selecting a winch based on the loaded and unloaded line speeds. Compare the amp draw with your vehicle’s ability to deliver electricity. Some of you may want to upgrade to a better alternator if you plan to run extra lights, therefore you would compare the amp draw with the upgraded electrical power source. And for that very reason, riptricket would probably be better off going with the M8000.

To bad the KJ's charging system will not put out more power even after installing a higher output amp.If you have the stock 136amp alternator or upgrade to the 160amp renny alternator the PCM will still make the alternator put out the same power. Now if you have the Renny already then you have a headstart since there PCM's are programmed to take advantage of the higher output alternator which the standard KJ will not do.

Anyways any winch is directly hooked to the battery and will overwelm any alternator anyway making the battery as the sole powersource.Get a good battery and the 136amp alternator is more then enough, the Optima Yellow Top is a good choice, most would say the Blue Top would be better but it would not since the Blue top is not ment to have a constant charge as a normal battery setup in a vehicle.
