| Post subject: | Finally Gave Out |
Well, 4 yrs, 1 month, and two weeks. That's how long it lasted. I have a feeling it could have lasted longer but I had to rush things. My battery finally took the dive yesterday. I was driving on the base from the start to finish (out and back course) of the first heat for the AF 1.5 mile run and I parked near the finish (too close to the secret fence area and went to jump in again and repeat my run for the second heat, when it did NOTHING. A Security Forces cop pulled up and told me I couldn't park there. I told him it was dead and he went to get a charger. Nothing. A friend pulled up in his little car and we attached the jumper cables. Nothing. I had him rev his enigine and you could hear it almost want to budge, but quickly just went to the clicking noise. Luckily I was at the corner where the BX is located so the frind took me over to the BX and I bought an Optima Yellow-top (SC34DU). It was the only one they had and they said it was the new model and should work. Well the economy obviously has cranked up battery prices because it cost $189. After turning in the old one to them. I remember seeing their price for them around $149 about four months ago. I get back to the KJ and guess what? Murphy's Law. I had taken out my socket set only three days earlier. I only had channel locks. No choice so I got the battery out and there was a lot of white powder corrosion on the terminal. Nothing to clean them so I did what I could to bang them off and connect the cables. Keep in mind, the cop is watching me from close-up so I don't have a lot of time (being parked close to a secret area fence does that to base cops). Well, it started right up. If I get a chance to get home early enough today after voting, I'll clean everything up and get a strap to hold it down. I do have a feeling that the old battery probably still worked but the corrosion was stopping it from working. It was time though. Funny thing is, that morning as I started it and left the garage for work, I told myself I need to get that Yellow-top very soon. I guess my KJ read my mind also and forced the issue. Question: I can't find anything on the SC34DU model on the Optima website. They recommend the D34 model. Anyone know anything about the models? I know Troy mentioned the models before but I don't have time to search for it as I am siogning off to head to work now. Thanks. |

I know the feeling, I replaced my stock (~7year old) battery and I KNOW it was still good!! I had it tested before I replaced it, but I thought it was causing my "no-start" problem, even replaced a starter. Ended up being my TRS. But like you said, it was time. Oh well!! |
