| Post subject: | Painting My Rims |
I was going to paint my orginal rims that came with my libby Renegade. The are a big chipped and the color has faded. I was going to paint them black and put the chrome nuts on them. Anyone do this? Any instructions or tips (primer, paint brand, etc.) would be great thanks. |

I'd recommend repainting the whole wheel, and not just the rim, if you really want the color to match right, not to mention that there probably is some wear on the wheel as well. |

there are many who have done that, but different ways. I did mine fairly simple. As anyone who does any paint work will tell you the most important thing to a paint job is the prep. needed: 120+ grit sand paper, cleaner, 3-4 cans of spray paint, clear coat. 1. I removed the wheels, cleaned very well with an ammonia based cleaner to remove any wax. 2. Then lightly sanded with 120 grit sand paper. be sure to do it lightly and cross hatch so as not to make any deep cuts into the soft aluminum. 3.Clean again. 4.As this point I taped the wheels off to prevent overspray. I used Duplicolor high performance wheel coating ( available at most auto store). Dont waste your time on the Duplicolor clear coat, get some rustoleum crystal clear coating. 5. Start spray off wheel, move across, and do not stop until off the other side, this prevents runs. 6. Do 2 light- medium coats. you dont have to get it at black as you want the first time. 7. allow to dry. repeat 5-6 with clear coat. There are many others that have done it much more complexed, but this has worked with me, and that's being thrashed through the mud and sand and regular road driving. they are holding up very well. |

OK, let me try again. When I painted my rims, I first stripped them down to bare metal with a chemical stripper. Then I rinsed them well, let them dry and sanded them with fine emery cloth. Next, I used Eastwood's Pre spray to clean/prep them. After that, I primed them with Eastwood self-etching black primer. Two coats. For the top coats I used Eastwood satin black wheel paint, several coats. This was a lot of work but after several months the rims still look great... |
