Has anyone ever wished they purchased some sort of extended warranty for their jeep? im asking because ive been having some problens as of late that will be expensive to repair should the warranty expire and the problem comes back. transmissions and steering wheel angle sensors arent cheap items and an alternator on the fritz isnt exactly a 5 dollar repair either. plus some of the things that went wrong could affect reliability. so i guess what im trying to ask is after your warranties expired, did you guys have a lot of problems out of your liberties?

After my 7/70 warranty expired, only had two problems. A TR Sensor and front pinion seal leak. The pinion leak wasn't bad, but the TR sensor was a pricey repair, got a $800 estimate from the dealer, took it to a mechanic, but wasn't that much cheaper. Everything else was just maintenance items, battery, fluids, etc...

Mine hasn't been worth much (at 45k out of 60k). So far most of the issues I've had have had some reason or another for being exempt from warranty coverage. The only problem I've had that's been fixed under warranty is a bad u-joint, which is not terribly expensive or difficult to fix. Last month, I had to pay a mortgage payment for them to replace the sunroof seal, tear apart the transmission (and find "nothing wrong", surprise), and replace the serpentine belt for the third time in two months. I've tried two separate dealers for service, both with abysmal results.

If the dealers actually knew how to troubleshoot problems, determine cause, and would own up to the problems, then the extended warranty would be worth something. However, Chrysler seems to have no interest in the customer after the sale. This will be the last vehicle I ever own from Daimler OR Chrysler.

You're still able to buy the extended warranty, just FYI

I got lucky in making my deal when I bought mine. They were pushing the lifetime bumper to bumper "wrapper" warranty through the dealer. I bought mine at end of month on Labor Day weekend. They were trying to make their month end sales quotas and I was that last one they needed. So I told them to throw in the "wrapper" and a third key with remote for free and I would buy it. I had already decided to buy it, but they didn't know that. The sales manager said that was one of the strangest requests he has had from a customer - not the warrantee, the key. Anyway, they did it and i got lifetime bumper to bumper on top of the lifetime power train. Extended warrantee has $100 copay after 50k miles, but that is ok. you can't get a dealer to fix anything for less than that anyway. Hopefully i will never even have to use it (besides window regulators, that is. HeHe)

before all this crazy stuff happened i settled on keeping the vehicle. everything seemed to work itself out it was driving great, got new tires it drove even better. then it didnt start one day out of the blue, it threw a code for low voltage, then a code for high voltage, then low voltage again so chrysler said the alternator is going up. then when i drove on straight roads while accelerating the ESP and TCS lights would all come on, but only if u were driving straight and accelerating atthe same time, if you turned the wheel or began to coast they would go out so they replaced the stering wheel angle sensor. then the front suspension... i dont even want to go into what has been going on with that. then another tranny problem which ended up only needing a reflash to fix. then the OBD systemstopped working so the check engine light was flashing. needless to say im not sure what to do but it may need to be replaced which i really dont want to do. this is the best in its class (trust me ive researched its 2 main competitors for their off road problems... stick with the kj/kk :? )

out of the last eleven vehicles I have owned, 9 have been brand new, never bought the extra extended warranty , nor have I ever used the regular warranty on anything, all of them ran up into the 200,000 mile plus range without going back to any crappy dealer

Guess I must be lucky

I really don't think the extended is what they make you think it is, somehow they can get out of most things

You didn't say if they fixed the alternator. All the symptoms you mention add up to a new battery, new alternator or both. Modern vehicles do strange things when the electrical system starts to go. Everything is computer controlled.

I am sure you are right. That is why I was not going to pay for it. They can always find a loophole in the fine print if they want to.

I bought my liberty used with 77000 miles on it. I opted for the 30000 mile extended warranty. I now have a little over 81000 miles on the odometer and I've had to bring it in for the front drive shaft, as well as the power steering pump and tensioner. I paid 2500 dollars for the warranty. I'm not sure what the dealership normally charges for all of that work, but I'd imagine that it's expensive. I'm glad I bought the warranty, and I hope that everything that's going to break, will break before the warranty's up. :D

Adding aftermarket mods can and WILL effect your vehicle, and in ways you don't want them to.

Oh a and the offroading you have been doing on your OEM suspension is sadly all your doing, time for a upgrade with parts that can handle the trails here in CO.

I got the 7/70 that covers the most extended warranty. At 20k I have another 7 months of the factory warranty left and I also think it's a joke :? They never can duplicate anything or say it needs to get worse
While driving when I shift my transfer case out of 4wd fultime on say a wet or snow covered road and the road clears and I shift to 2wd if I don't pause a bit in 4 part time it stays in part time forever unless you put it back in part time, drive it for a block then go to 2wd. The shifter is being allowed to move smoothly without being forced. They can duplicate this but it "needs to get worse". I told him if my wife drives it ONCE in 4wd it will be worse and on a flatbed at their door 8) He blew me off!

How did you get a refund on it? For the $2500 I paid I could get a Suncoast TC and a inmotion tune restoring it to what it was before F37

Extended warranties might be good for some but if you can wrench most stuff yourself even on the CRD I think we'll be ahead with dealer service being what it is

Thanks
Joe

I purchased a $1100 max care extended warranty from Carmax. Recently, it covered $1000 in repairs less a $75 deductable.

nothing major has been added except wheels and new tires and the new tires are teh exact same size as the old ones. andif chrysler found the wheels or tires to be a culprit im confident they would have denied warranty coverage a LONG time ago. all my little electronics aside from teh head unit use the cigarette lighter and they get unplugged when not in use. nothing is hard wired into the wiring. the suspension was actually fixed under warranty because things werent torqued to spec they believe when they did the tranny swap. NOTHING up front is worn to unserviceable conditions, damaged, or about to fail aside from teh sway bar bushings. because of this chrysler knows that this vehicle has not done anything it cant do which in turn to them means it hasnt been abused. the question was who here has seen value in their extended warranty, is it worth it or has your kj been so reliable you dont need it; not point the finger at me because im just trying to get things ive messed up fixed under warranty. if they tell me something is broken and its a result of something ive done and IT SOUNDS REASONABLE ill gladly pay for it but so far nothing has failed because of my neglect/abuse... thanks

on with the original question...

i dont know about anywhere else in the states, but here in MD, we have a company that works like your insurance company. meaning that you pay a monthly fee, and if something breaks, they cover it. im not sure if you have to have a deductable or not but im thinking about getting it. its not too expensive either.

You are just too hardcore on the trails.

Stop jumping ramps with it.

Rangerd77: Does that include a mod'd vehicle or stock ones? You might be paying a high price for a mod'd one. Keep us informed of any new info you get.

Darryl, some of those things are not hard to replace yourself and the cost of the part is all you pay besides garage time (i.e. Auto Hobby at Academy). Get a repair manual and give it a try. Check to make sure the hobby shop has all of the needed tools before you tear into it though. Also, read the repair section a few times first to understand what is said to be done and so you know what they are talking about (you can research the meanings and procedures on google). Get someone with experience to be your guide. You will feel really proud once you accomplish it for the first time.

Of course, I started with a simple 4cyl Toyota pickup engine with no "power" anything on it and learned from there.

The extended warranty seems useless once you mod the heck out of the KJ.

My original dealer is so bad the service manager can bite me and its mechanics suck. They won't even hold up their end of the deal with the original warranty, why would I want to give them more money. I have just learned to repair things myself then I know what has been done. After the first problem (front driveshaft), which they diagnosed as a bad front wheel bearing, I brought it home and my 16 year old son and I diagnosed the problem in the garage. Then we talked to Tom Woods. My Liberty will never see a dealership again, nor will I ever give them as much as a penny.
