Looking for some input on this code p0300. Thru this code tonight. It started out as a flashing CEL then periods of no flashing but remaining on, and before we made it home it the CEL remained on perm. Overall trip was about 20 miles. Engine sounded fine, no smoke, no loss of power, no overheating, no smells.

I would think it would be more specific as to the misfire. It does not give any other code to indicate which cylinder, only p0300.
what are your thoughts or ideas for troubleshooting? Plugs and wires first? 2.4 4cyl.

Thanks!

Well the 2.4 uses only one coil unlike the 3.7 uses 6 different coils so the PCM can not tell which cylinder is misfiring.I'd try replacing the plugs and wires first,if that does not help further testing of the coil is needed since it maybe bad or you could have a bad driver in the PCM also.

thanks tjkj,
that makes sense. if only 1 coil, it cant identify which is not firing. Ill try the plugs and wires first, followed by a new coil.
if it is a bad driver (not me), what would that entail? Like reprogramming?

If the plugs/wires or new coil does not fix the misfire you need to get it professionally diagnosed to find the cause. If it happens to be a bad driver in the PCM and new PCM and programming is needed and can only be done at a dealer. It is rare for the driver to go out though. It could be as simple as a bad tank of gas but new plugs/wires only helps and never hurts.
