| Post subject: | Drive line vibration. |
My KJ CRD has developed a drive line vibration. It only has about 32K miles on it. I have ruled out U-joints because it is constant. Sometimes backing up I get a shutter, that I believe is from the rear differential. I am not sure they are not related... Has anyone else experienced this? |

is it only when backing up? it seems normal, most people have experienced it, I have since 2003 and 98K ago no ill effects. |

The vibration is constant while driving. The shutter is only when backing up... |

check you front drive shaft, the shudder is normal, the vibration is not. Check your front driveshaft for excessive play forwards/backwards and check CV joint Boots for signs of rips or tears. Tires balanced? alignment? |

I'm also having some vibes. It vibrates and kind of rumbles loudly around 65-70mph. I wont go over 70 with it doing that so I dont know what would happen then. I imagine it would get worse. All the way up to 65mph, everything is totally normal and quiet. At 65 you start to hear it and by 70 its loud. I thought it was my old tires, but i just got new ones and still have the problem. Does this sound the same as your problem? I just recognized it as a problem over the weekend. Like I said, I previously thought it was the tires, so I havent had a chance to investigate. |

you say its constant. so you mean that it does not change at all with speed? That seems odd. |

The tires have been rotated and balanced. So I ruled them out, or should I?? The calipers are OK as well. The vibration is constant, but it varies in intensity with speed, it is very noticeable at about 35, seems to almost go away and gets more noticeable worse again at 70 or so. I hate to take it to the "Stealer" because our local one doesn't know squat. He couldn't even help me with the speedo re-cal... The first thing he will tell me is my lift and tires are the problem... |

I am having a similiar issue right now amoung others... I pick up a vibration around 65 and up. I had been thinking driveshaft also and 4wheelparts told me the front shaft was shot when I had it there for a gear whine issue... so I took it to the dealer this morning and wasted 4hours for them to tell me it was fine. I still think it is the shaft but going to have to find another dealer since it is still a warrenty issue. This dealer told me they fixed mine.. by balancing the tires which I didn't request, nor did I pay the $120 they tried to charge me... anyway it didn't fix it. If I get it tracked down I will post. Good luck. |

One thing you may want to check is the tightness of the 8mm bolts that hold the front driveshaft onto the tcase and diff. When I took my front end apart on Tuesday, one of my front bolts was backing out on its own, it had practically fallen out. |

I would recommend you pull the front driveshaft or bring it back to the dealer to ask them to do that, and then test drive your vehicle. If the vibration is not present with the driveshaft removed, you may have the same problem that I've had and that is the small boot going into the transfer case is ripped. At high speeds, it picks up a vibration because the grease has seeped out and the unit is heating up. By taking a flashlight, I could see the boot had disappeared on one side of the shaft and from reading other posts on this forum, this has happened with many other folks also. I had the exact same symtoms that you have, with vibrations only at certain high speeds. Drove me crazy. Dealer had the car for days and couldn't identify. Finally took it to a drive shaft specialist that identified the problem. Identified immediately upon pulling the shaft. So if you've ruled out tire balancing and other options, then I'd do the next step of pulling the shaft and doing a test drive. |

I'll keep you posted. |
