Post subject:  Transfer case leaking Question about it.

I have the NP231 transfer case that is leaking from what I believe is the rear output shaft housing. It isn't leaking from the drive shaft, it's leaking from between the housing and the transfer case.

Following this link you can see a diagram of the transfer case. Number 41 is the housing. http://www.cyberjeep.com/products.asp?dept=5654

How much of a pain is this going to be to pull apart and reseal, guessing with RTV?

If its too much I am not goint to do it and just have someone else do it, since I can't be without this thing. Also noticed while I was under there that the front drive shaft seems to be leaking on the oposite side of the transfer case.

Any ideas?

I can post pictures if needed.

After reading about the NP231 a bit more I think I will have to drop the TC and then replace the bushings and seals in the housing. Then RTV the housing replace it and that should do it.

I am going to call around tomorrow to see how much this will cost. I really can't afford to have it down next week when I have to go back to work.

Well nobody is willing to give me anything over the phone. The general auto repair shops won't touch it. They all directed me to a transmission shop.

So I called them (in Brighton, MI) and they want to check it out. I told them I think it is the bushing in the ouput shaft housing, but he said they would have to look at it before quoting me anything.

AHHH! I hate that and to boot they can't see it til Monday.

Thanks for letting me vent :)
