| Post subject: | Recovery Gear Question |
Well, my brother "liberated" my recovery strap the other day after I hauled his Xterra out of an icy ditch. So now I'm in the market for the following and want some feedback: 1. recovery strap (length, width, brand feedback wanted) 2. hi-lift jack (what size people are using) 3. good solid shovel (brands, materials used to make shovel, how to mount it to roof rails) Thanks in advance for all the input! |

Rule #1: don't go cheap on recovery gear. 48" is a good size for a hi-lift. I've used mine several times and never needed a bigger one. Also fits nicely under the rear seat. I have a standard short-handled spade that I attach in the rear of the KJ with Quik-Fist clamps. Some guys like the folding shovels, I prefer a regular shovel. Straps: I carry a 3" x 20' recovery strap and a 1" x 20' tow rope (rated for 18,000 lbs). I've only used the strap though so far, to pull a GMC out of a snowbank. |

I keep two 2"x30' tow straps and one 4"x10' tree saver in the car at all times along with a collection of clevis shackles and an extra hitch receiver - Never know when they might come in handy. Also on the kj at all times is a 48" hi-lift. Mine is mounted to the roof basket, but as snowsport said it does fit almost perfectly under the rear seat. I did the shovel thing last year and had it mounted to the roof basket and it had rusted over something fierce by the spring. I bought a $10 shovel at menards |

Thats nice to know that the high lifts fit under the rear seat, did not know that. There is still no place really to use a high lift on my Libby, but they still can come in handy for other things as well. |

i always carry a 3x30 foot strap (with metal hooks.. VERY DANGEROUS) a 4x30 tow strap with not metal hooked ends.. a "tire repair bag" which has a small compressor, tire repair kit, fit-ah-flat, and slime. and a Warn Recovery bag.. currently has 3 D rings, tree saver, snatch block, gloves, and a chain. for the few pounds and space it takes up i consider it all very cheap insurance. i have not invested in a high lift jack yet because i wasn't sure how it would work on the KJ without an adapter to use it on a wheel to lift... now with my bumper i could use it on the front end but not anywhere else.. when i eventually get super skinks i'll think more about a highlift |

That's where I'll end up using one once I find one. i have stock ones that came on my renegade.. but i think they are too far under the jeep to use a highlift |

I have a 3 X 30 that I keep under the seat. I have a 48" Hi Lift, but Taz is right I can't find anywhere to use it on the Liberty. I have hooked it to the shackle on my back bumper but the 48" isn't tall enough to get my tire off the ground with the lift I have. I also have the Hi Lift recovery kit that makes it easier to use the Hi Lift as a winch. It takes a long time and a lot of work but it works. I am going to get one of these http://www.hi-lift.com/accessories/lift-mate.html to make the jack a more functional recovery tool. My shovel of choice is a Rigid D-handle round point. It has the shorter handle so it fits in the back of the Liberty, but with the D-handle it is still very functional and they are only about $20 at Home Depot. I haul lots of other crap along too, but that answers the three you asked about. |
