Post subject:  roof guards

I have the renegade style roof basket, the one that surrounds 4 sides. I want to put some really simple guards on the roof so I can set stuff on there without worrying about scratches. Just some simple adhesive backed rubber strips that could stick onto the ribs in the steel would be great. any suggestions? weather stripping? i dunno. throw some ideas out there.

p.s. i know at least one person is going to say "well why did you get that stupid thing anyway, you should have just gotten 'x' brand roof basket like mine! youre an idiot! blah blah blah!" i like the way it looks and i want to make it more useful, so supportive suggestions are welcome! thanks! :D

You might want to look at that stair tread grippy stuff that you can get at the hardware store. It's an adhesive tape with a rough, textured surface. Very durable/weatherproof stuff.

Another option is getting a small amount of bedliner and painting that on.

or strips like body moulding, can buy it in a roll and put some down each strip, could put luggage or others things up there without rubbing the paint that way

There that's out of the way for you!!

I vote for Bedlining the roof inside the basket area.

ha ha, thanks 501!

good suggestions guys. if they have a rubber body moulding that i can stick on, then that would fit the bill the best i think. i also thought of bedlining the roof, but i'm not sure if i want to do that or not...

PM Rock Lizard, he sells some edge moulding stuff that is 3m adhesive backed that he sells to the XJ guys after they cut their wheel wells for 35s to give a clean look w/o flares. He would know what the stuff is called, I just remember seeing it on the shelf and I picked up a few boxes of it from his distributor for him a while back.

Go to a home store and look at "Stair Tread Strips" or "Anti slip tape". Basically adhesive backed rough textured vinyl. They usually have a "mild" (lightly textured) version & a sandpaper like version. It's used to stick on outdoor stairs to prevent slips & falls. We used to use it on our skateboards before they mass produced stuff for that purpose (yes, I'm old). Anyway, it usually comes in width increments of 1/2" , 1", and I believe 3" and various colors and on a roll so you can get any length. The adhesive is real aggresive (made for outdoor use) so once you apply, it's probably gonna be permanent. I would suggest the less textured version for a roof as the "sandpaper" version may abrade any luggage you put up there.

Alternatively, I have used really thick, clear vinyl from a wallpaper store. It is really thick (I said that) and also adhesive on one side. Has to be cut to size but has the advantage of being clear. If you apply it with some soapy water and a squegee as you would any good vinyl decal, you will get all the bubbles out and it will be practically transparent. Won't do anything to prevent slip but will also not obscure the paint. Plus, you can cover large areas with it. Be sure to find a real heavy grade not a thin film. Motorcycle shops have it in smaller (like 8" square) patches that dirt bike riders use to cover thier numbers and decals with so they don't rub off from use.

cacher,

good ideas and thank you. i'm really looking for something with more thickness to it though, like an actual rubber rib. or like the molding on the side of a car door. i think i'll be able to find something like this at an auto parts store, but i havent had a chance to go look yet.

They have 25 and I think 50 foot rolls of the body side moulding Jon, Older GM pickups back in the later 70s had a wide like 1.5/ 2.0 inches or so . that would work great, it was black in the center with some chrome on the outside. If you can't find it let me know, I still have some contacts down in marietta that can get it. May have to try body shop supply places, most regular parts stores will not have a wide selection.

OR get real creative and use some maple strips 2 inches wide/ one inch think, thats what they used to use on the old woodys  fasten them down with 2 sided tape....CUSTOM

JC Whitney has that stuff you see on the back of all the livery cab bumpers. It's like almost 3/4 of an inch tall and about 2 inches wide. Pretty thick stuff also.
