Has anyone tried to replace the shift gate indicator lamp?Mine's out and was just wondering.I searched but no luck.

I replaced mine when it went out a few months ago, had to remove the entire center console so I could get in to the teeny tiny little bulb that had gone out. Didn't think to get pics but I came up with some nice little names for the engineers that designed that litle bit of joy

The bulbs I got were Sylvania 2721s; two little bulbs for $1.39. Here's what the FSM has for the procedure:

(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(2) Remove the center console from the floor panel
transmission tunnel. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/
FLOOR CONSOLE - REMOVAL).
(3) From the left side of the vehicle, reach between
transmission range indicator and the floor panel
transmission tunnel to access the lamp socket (Fig.
15).
(4) Rotate the transmission range indicator lamp
socket counterclockwise about 30 degrees on the bottom
of the range indicator.
(5) Pull the transmission range indicator lamp
socket and bulb straight out of the bulb mounting
hole.
(6) Pull the transmission range indicator lamp
bulb straight out of the socket.

Thanks.we'll see if we can manage that.It's kinda cold out I believe it'll have to wait.Don't want to crack the plastic.

My wifes light on her shifter has been out for some time. Now maybe I'll fix it.

Not quite three years but it's been a while.I don't drive the Jeep much in the summer.I've got a few motorcycles I ride.I tend to ride year round just less mileage.No ice,no snow.So I've been driving the Jeep and it needs some attention.Thanks again.

Where can you buy the bulbs referenced earlier?

They should be in most auto parts stores - I bought mine at a Checker auto store, also known as Kragen, Schucks or Murray's Discount in other parts of the country. Pretty sure Pep Boys, Autozone, Napa and others will carry them, just look for the aisle with headlights and interior bulbs.

My apologies for dredging up an old thread, but thanks to corwyyn for the instructions and part number for the bulb that was a great help. Removing the console wasn't nearly as difficult as it looked at first, and gave me a good chance to clean and vacuum some hard to reach spots. Some notes, though:

There are four screws/bolts holding the console on, two in the armrest cubby, one each under the shifter bezel and 4WD shifter boot.

As always, a plastic putty knife makes a great tool to remove bezels and boots.

Once the console is loose, lift it a bit and pop out the rear window controller panel then disconnect the wiring harness.
Although it isn't necessary, it's not difficult to remove the plastic cover for the shift indicator so you can easily see how to remove and reinstall the light socket. To be honest, it might be easier to remove the plastic cover and translucent panes to remove the bulb than to remove and reinstall the socket from below.
