| Post subject: | Chrysler Shutting Down |
As of this Friday, Chrysler is shutting down for the next 30-days. Quote: Chrysler to Close All 30 Manufacturing Plants for One Month
NEW YORK — Chrysler says it will close all 30 of its manufacturing plants for a month starting Friday. The company needs to match production to slowing demand and conserve cash. Tighter credit markets are keeping would-be buyers away from their showrooms, Chrysler says. Dealers are unable to close sales for buyers due to a lack of financing, and estimate that 20 to 25 percent of their volume has been lost due to the credit situation. Chrysler claims it is nearing the minimum level of cash it needs to run the company and will have trouble paying bills after the first of the year. Operations at the 30 plants will be idled at the end of shift on Friday, Dec. 19, and will not come back online until Jan. 19, 2009, or later. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,468966,00.html |

The closings are nothing new people. DC has always closed this time of year for two weeks. This time around they added another two weeks. And Ford does the same, whereas they extended their's one week totaling three weeks off this year. |

GM is doing the same. It's part of a power play to show the gov what can happen if they don't get their cash. |

68 bucks an hour???? very few if any have those and they have been there for 30 years plus people on the line that have worked there for 4 or 5 years are WAY less than that, I know some who qualify for government assisted housing WHAT most do not take into account is the fact that all benefits are fiqured into an amount say someone is making 25 an hour, thats 52000 a year, then add in insurance / retirement/ and other things and that person is costing the company an easy 65000 at least per year most likely more now thats 31.25 an hour When they give out a 65 an hour thats all taxes insurance everything per year Do you know that to live in a average one bedroom apartment and just survive in todays economy it takes a person making at least 13.50 an hour and thats in the Midwest, with no auto working jobs everyone suffers, even you my friend |

How much money is that worker forced to pay the Union? I'm not a fan of today's Unions and until we get them out there is no saving manufacturing. Gone are the days where everyone needs protection from the Upton Sinclair descibed jobsites. I worked in a UAW controlled facility during college...was the worst job I had...worse than the steel mill. I wasn't able to do work for more than 15 or 20 minutes every hour or I got guys yelling at me that I was making them look bad. Well, do you job and you won't look bad I'd say. The steel mill was hot as hell but I did not have to spent 20 or 30 minutes creating things to do to avoid work. All in all though as a country and as an economic system we need to redesign how we do things or everyone is going to be working for Walmart and Mcdonalds because we will have nothing else... |

I work construction and I'm union. It doesent work that way around here If you don't do your job and do it faster and better than the guy behind you he will take your job. Other parts of the county may be different than here.I'm not a big fan of unions I only belong because i have to so I'm not sticking up for them just wanted to say that there not all like you think. |

This is my speculation but…………………at this rate, we’ll be lucky if Chrysler is making anything in six months. If you think things are bad now, wait about six months when millions of people are without jobs and the dollar is worth 25 cents. |

please try to be a little more respectful. Just because some union workers are worthless doesn't mean they all are. |

All in all though as a country and as an economic system we need to redesign how we do things or everyone is going to be working for Walmart and Mcdonalds because we will have nothing else... here is a perfect example or union positives. Shortly after I won a bid on Oshkosh Corps paint line(i mean within a week), my boss was already trying to fire me for a mistake that he made. A truck was suppose to have been painted tan; an we painted it camo. The job card we had said camo and he printed the card. BUT somehow it was my(and coworkers) fault that it was a green. Steward stepped in and pretty much told him go *************@@^#%&* yourself. In any no union shop i would have lost my job because some tool didnt want to look bad and take the blame that was due. |
