I got a nice new impact wrench for a Christmas gift for myself, and now I need a socket to change the tires. I read on the wikibooks page about the liberty that I need a 1/2" socket but after getting this I found it cant even get close to fitting... What size socket do I need to get these tires off?

I use a 3/4in impact.

The stock lugs will eventually fall off if you use a impact wrench a lot.

1/2 inch is the lug bolt size , not the lug nut size

120,000 miles

And in the last 70k, the tires have been rotated 12 or 13 times and removed God knows how many, between brake jobs, suspension work, etc...with an impact, and nothing else, with the same 3/4" 12pt socket (yes, 12pt)
Then hand-torquing with a 1/2 drive torque wrench and a 6 pt socket.

All lugnuts are intact.

Thunderbird

it is all in how you do it isn't it? 114,000 and mine are rotated every 3 to 5000 miles as well plus like you at other times, all the chrome caps is on my ...lugnuts yet

I've never impacted my lugs [on or off] and still those caps have busted off on 3 of my lug nuts. I've been thinking of going to a solid lug nut.

where can I get a set of solid lugnuts? I know this has been discussed before but I am too lazy on a Sunday morning to do a search!

Another question, how big of an air compressor will I need to use an impact wrench for lugs? Wife is thinking of an after Christmas present and this would fit my needs nicely!

You can pick up the solid lugnuts at most any parts store. Some of them will be 13/16" though, so check if you still use the factory breaker bar.

I have the sears 30gal compressor. Loud as all hell, but cheap and does the job. I got the red single stage one. It has better flow than the higher pressure double stage. If you wait till they have a sale, you can usually score a hose, and a couple of air tools for free.

You didn't say wether you were referring to a garage or portable compressor? Regardless, you need a compressor with a 2 CFM (minimum) to 5 CFM @90PSI to properly use a impact wrench. Having a compressor which is not capable of supplying enough CFM for a specific air tool is worthless.

McGard - try NAPA.

personal garage but I do all my work in the driveway so I will need to be somewhat portable and maybe long hoses. Thanks for the info on McGard too!

Buy a bigger compressor if you have room.. the extra storage tank means that the compressor runs less.

I also have a 30 gallon crapsman compressor. Works like a champ but it's louder than civic with a trashcan muffler.

Most good impacts need a min of 9 CFM at 90psi to run at advertised torque ratings.

True, however - I should have included "professional grade" impacts will require more CFM, but the Craftsman and other consumer impacts will generally work within the range of 2-5 CFM.

Bottom line - you should always know the CFM of your most powerful air tool and choose a compressor that will run the tool. Of course if you think you might add air tools in the future (especially professional grade), than consider this as well when shopping for a compressor.
