Post subject:  getting Gas!!!!

I am currently on a trip to Ks and every time I get gas, gas shoots out and gets all over my hands and my jeep. I have never had a problem gassing up before but on this trip every time I'm at the pump it comes rushing out the top on my hands and down the side of my jeep and puddles on the ground.
does anyone have any ideas on why this could just start happening?

I had this happen a couple times and my theory is that it's the PUMP's fault, not your KJ. A certain pump at a nearby gas station seems to do this all the time, while this never happens at other gas stations. Maybe you got a couple bad pumps in a row?

It's gotta be something to do with the gas pumps "auto-stop" mechanism. Since there is no system on the vehicle that tells the pump when to stop, it can't really be the Jeep's fault, unless maybe the venting system is somehow at fault? Just speculating.

Those crazy Kansas pumps!

Pumps can work differently in different parts of the country. Some have vapor recovery and many don't. Keep that in mind. Some have the stop sensors, some don't.

It happens to me every single !@#$ time I fill up. I've given up. Start the pump and walk away...

Sounds like a possible plugged gas tank vent which would cause the issue you are having.

The vent is attached to the fill tube and is covered by the wheelwell liner,it's a black cylinder looking thing, you'll see it if you remov ethe liner and look at the fill tube.

Mine does this almost everytime I fill up also.

Does the filler hole have a flap that covers it? I can't remember and mine does not.

I am going to check the breather tube next time I am cleaning my KJ.

Mine has never had a flapper but they may of added it on the 05+ kj's. If yours had one and it broke off then or course that would cause a problem.

I had this problem on another car, when I went to Cali. 3 different name-brand gas stations, always the same problem. I was beginning to worry it was the connecting tube between the two tanks, or maybe the vent tube on the filler neck..

But no, it was the pumps' faults. Their recovery systems were shot... therefore some people would either get the overfilling problem, and others couldn't get the pump to stay pumping for more than a second.

My wife's 05 sport does the same thing. Sometimes it splashes before shutting off, then others times, once it shuts off, DO NOT try to put more in or it will come out.

Mine does this as well. I realized that if I pumped the gas nice and slow (manually holding the lever under the handle, rather than just "setting" it) - no more overflow & the pump still shuts off when the tank is full.

I am not able to "top off" my Libby. If I try and round up to the next couple cents, the fuel sprays out all over me.

I have heard that you should never try to top off a gas tank (filling as much as possible after the click), as this screws up the evaporative canister system leading to repair bucks. I just round it off a few cents and let her be...

Yep, if you look in your owner's manual, it says that you should stop at the first click, and not keep filling it.

Yes it does. I recently helped a friend replace his evap can on a '06 Colorado 4x4 because of this very issue. - I do the same by rounding up, by .25 cents.
