Post subject:  Trailer Lighting Wiring

My 03 KJ did not come from the factory with the tow package. Do I have necessary wiring to put an electrical box in for lighting?

Does anyone know of a resource to use to install the box myself? Uhaul wants 108.00 to install it.

Thanks tom :D

Do you know if there are easy instructions to do so? I'm an idiot with most things I do the first time.

easy to do even an idiot  can do it...just kidding, all you have to do is remove the taillights and basically unplug the harness and plug the new one in and replug, maybe 10 minutes or so at the most

Also don't forget the trailer brake controller if you have a heavy trailer that you will be pulling around.

Any trailer over 3000 pounds requires trailer brakes in almost every state.

If you need to wire in a brake controller you can check out this thread: LOST HISTORY

Of course, to run trailer brakes you'll need a trailer harness with more than 4 wires on it too...

Edit: Here is a great site with information on towing restrictions by state. Towing World / Towing Laws

If he is trying to pull over 3,000 lbs WITHOUT the rest of the factory tow package, then we will see posts from him about transmission failure and power steering pump failure and other fun stuff.

I'm only pulling 1500 lbs or less.. a basic uhaul trailer with boxes of clothing and such

grabbing a 4x8 which weighs 850 empty

I was thinking about upgrading to a tow package, but I didn't see the necessity to do so as I never haul much to begin win

I haul 1500 or more on a regular basis in a 6X10 covered trailer and more than that in my 6 X 8 flatbed with sides , fiqured one time I have had a loaded trailer on behind mine at least 20,000 miles of its life and no problems at all, don't let them scare you from pulling it, regular maintenance stopping every now and again if its a long haul etc.

You don't have the factory tow package either then?

Whats the major differences with the factory tow package, other than a belt driven radiator fan?

I've never said the Liberty can't haul the loads. The KJ does a very good job towing. I use mine to pull my sailboat all the time and used to haul my Mustang around with it on a dolly.

The point I was emphasizing was the legal way to tow a load over a certain weight. It's good information to have if you own your own equipment. Especially since just having trailer brakes doesn't mean that they function. Your Tow rig needs to the brake controller wired up...

Chances are the u-haul will have self contained trailer brakes on the trailer to make it road legal for heavy loads. The self contained system is known as surge brakes. So for any u-haul situation, you should be covered.

Tow package had:
Mechanically Driven fan (off the water pump)
Oil Cooler
Class 3 Hitch
Factory 7-pin trailer harness
