| Post subject: | How many Amateur Radio KJ owners? |
Just wondering how many KJ owners are also licensed amateur radio ops? I have been licensed since 1992, originally as KB5VIA but changed to AC7YC when I got my Extra class license. It would sure be nice to know there are some other hams I could talk to when I am on the road - I have an Alinco DX-70 installed in my '03 Sport. Corwyyn EDIT: Callsign changed to AD5VG - got it changed after teh move back to NM. |

I don't have my license yet. I'm working on it. It's tough with work. My father has been a ham for years and has been trying to work with me so I can get my license. His call is N4ZUV. I'll let you know when I get my license and get the radio setup in the Jeep. |

How does one go about getting into ham radio? Is it a better option than cb? |

I'm in New York, Hudson Valley Region.(near West Point) I have my General Class ticket. Started reading up for Extra, but haven't made any real progress though. I have a Kenwood TM-G707 2m/70cm which I haven't installed yet. I also have a Magnum 257 10m which I leave on a cig lighter plug. I'm looking to get a Yaesu 857D with the ATAS-120 for my Liberty. |

Im in the end stage of studying for my Technician class lisence, my dad has been a ham since his 20's I believe. We decided when I get my lisence, it is an excuse to load up our KJ's with HAM equipment. (yes, we both have KJ's, its pretty cool.) |

Seth, I know you're in AZ, but I don't know which area. If you are in the Phoenix area you can go over to Ham Radio Outlet and check out some of the publications they have for sale; I would recommend picking up a copy of 'Now You're Talking' which will get you all the info you need to get your Technician (lowest class) license. And you can check out some of the radios and equipment on the market and maybe get one of the sales people to give you a demo. If you have any questions send me a PM or e-mail. |

I'm actually taking my test July 30th. I've been into radios for a long time now so I can pass the technician exam with no problem. If I can just make time to sit down and study, I'd like to go ahead and get the general exam, and the 5wpm code taken care of while I'm at it. I'm also already attending ARES club meetings and plan to test and join that too. I've already bought and installed a Kenwood TM-G707A dual bander in the Liberty so I can listen in, can't wait till I can get my call sign and tune up the antenna! |

Seth, HRO is located at 19th ave and Dunlap, just down the street from DeVry. There are clubs around town that have classes and tests monthly, check out this page of ham radio club listings and search in AZ. Anyone else interested can search on their respective states to find clubs nearby. TNKJ, I would urge you to study for the code along with your tech test; 5wpm is slow enough to count dits and dahs to figure out the letters, and once you pass the code test all you have to do is study for the other elements and take the tests. I tried getting the 13wpm test 3 times for the old general class but just couldn't get it down. Good Luck to all! |

I would recommend picking up a copy of 'Now You're Talking' which will get you all the info you need to get your Technician (lowest class) license. Now You're Talking by ARRL?? I used that book for my Technician test....that is the most BORING book! The ARRL book is filled with boring fluff. The Gordon West book (which I used for my General and working of my my Extra class) is so much more to the point!! If you want to do 4X the amount of reading, and read about peoples "stories" read "Now You're Talking" by the ARRL. If you want the meat and potatoes to take and pass the test go with the Gordon West book "Technician Class" Element 2 (available at Radio Shack -item#64-2440, Ham radio shops, Barnes & Nobles as a special order). |

| Post subject: | Ham or CB |
I want to put a radio in my KJ. Ive always thought about getting a ham license. What advantages does ham radio offer over CB (aside from power). My applications are probably for saftey, and also to talk with friends who have ham radios in their cars. thanks I'll re-post in the electronics section. |

I took a 2 day boot camp that was in Austin, TX last year. I got my Technician class license. The class was very interesting and quick. I also used the practice test on qrz.com and I feel it helped a lot. http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl Juan KE5CQO |
