Post subject:  wheel bearings

ok, I know there is a thread somewhere that i can't seem to locate. But I believe my wheel bearings are going south.

Around 20-25mph I can hear a sound that sounds like chree chree chree (say it out loud, haha). it will do it weather im on the gas, off of it, braking, whatever. It is definately from the front. I've got a lil over 100K on them now. Time to change?

Where do i get them? how much? how hard? I looked on wholesale mopar, and a parts list I have, and they don't list them anywhere...

sure its not the U Joints they will make a sound something like you (I THINK  ) are describing with every rotation, and since you changed the angles some recently, just a thought

not too hard to change one.. but you will need i believe a 12pt. or 8pt socket(i forget) to get 3 bolts out that go from behind the knuckle out towards the wheels. i had a slight vibration so i changed mine (passenger side) but it didnt help :( you have to change the knuckle to change the wheel bering

those bolts are a son of a gun to get out or at least they were on the one I did

Those bolts require a E12 or E14 Torx socket. The knuckle stays, the unit bearing with the hub is what's changed.

Wheel bearings in my experience (on 3 different cars) have always made an ear-breaking HUMMMMMMMMMMM sound. ANd the pitch changes as you make turns, and change speeds. I would look somewhere else first.

x2.. and they normally dont go out at the same time. the sound should get worse if you turn right opposed to left of vise versa

well I may certainly have that hummmm sound, but I can't hear it over the tires. I changed the U Joints about 15K ago, but I'm not going to rule it out.

I know that my front DS has another torn CV boot, so i guess i will pull it and see if that is the noise, but I don't remember it making that noise on my last one.
Also, I checked the wheel bearings about a week ago, just by pulling the tire, and caliper/caliper bracket and spinning it, it didn't make any bad noises, and seemed very smooth.

Also was in some sand last night, so I will spray everything out ridiculously well with a pressure washer to see if i can get rid of it.

well about a year ago i changed all pads, checked them the other day and they had plenty left. Calipers aren't sticking, wheels are cool to touch after driving.

Best way to check for slop is to jack up that corner of the vehicle, leaving the wheel on, and try to shake the wheel with your hands at the 12oclock and 6oclock positions. If it feels even a slight bit loose... Then it's probably a wheel bearing.

make sure they check your cv joint, because my bearings were going out on the right and go it back and still had the noise, and now the the cv shaft is being replaced....

My KJ is currently making the noise you describe. I can only hear it with windows down, radio off, going 15 to 35 mph. I can't tell where it's coming from. I'm hoping it's just the u-joints. I'm going to buy a couple and replace them this weekend. I'll post back if it fixes it.
