Post subject:  just a couple things.............

Hi everyone, I am new to the world of KJs. I recently bought a 2004 KJ Limited and was wondering if I could get some pointers on a few issues?
I did not receive an owners manual with my new/used Jeep.

1- Turning off the passenger side airbag. Can this be done? I would like it if the little one could ride up front so she can use the heated seats too. (-51C today)

2- Resetting the "next service" indicator

3- The tailgate rattles really bad, can I simply tighten it somehow?

4- What should I use for engine oil in it, I'm going to go get it changed today and want to put in castrol syntec, like I put in the wrangler but I'm unsure of the grade to use. 10w 30? 5w 30?

Thank you for any help with these questions.

I also have a 2008 JK with a 2.5" Teraflex lift and previously had a 2001 TJ with a 4" skyjacker 3/4" spacers a 1" body lift 4.88's and 34" Swamper LTB's. I plan on dong a frankenlift on this one and some other goodies.

Thanx again ))>SUPERBIRD<((

My tailgate rattled pretty bad when I bought mine. I wrapped electrical tape around the catch plate a few times, rattle gone.

Welcome to the world of KJ's. You will find that it is a good Jeep and more capable than most give it credit for.

Anyway, did you look in the hidden slot above the glove box for the owners manual? That is where it is kept.

use 5w30 oil.

Use the reset button on the EVIC to reset the oil change intervals. You said you have a Limited so you must have the overhead EVIC.

The airbag is only supposed to work if it senses over a certain amount of weight. I forget how much at the moment. You might be ok. Does the 04 you have show if the air bag is activated on the grab bar on the passenger side dash?

I think the air bag sensor on the seat is set to work when the weight limit of 99+lbs. is met.

Someone mentioned it already, but the OM is usually in a small slot above the actual glove box. If you can't find it, you can always order one from MOPAR or off of a site like eBay

I do not think there is a way to disable the front passenger bag on the early KJ's. If there were a method for disabling the PAB, there would be an indicator light somewhere on the centerstack or near the airbag (grab handle)

5W-30 for cold months. 10W-30 in the summer or just use 5W-30 year round

Thank you for all replies and the welcome. I was not aware there was a "secret cubby hole" I'll go out and look tomorrow. I will also try the electrical tape on the gate latch. The grab bar does have an indicater light on it but only lights up when you first start the Jeep.

Thanx again for the information it was most helpful

I have an 04 & if I set groceries, books etc.. on the passenger seat the light on the grab bar will light up saying "Airbag off". Have you tried having your daughter sit in the seat with the car running to see if the light comes on? If it doesn't I probably wouldn't have her ride there--not worth the risk of having the airbag deploy on a child. I have read stories of the passenger airbag deploying in non-accident situations ( hitting a parking block hard etc..) & killing or seriously hurting small children. Don't actually remember what kind of cars involved but I think it can happen in any Make or model.

If there is no switch than the system for the PAB will be weight activated for 90 pounds. I would probably ride with her in the back of the KJ since it's the safest part of the vehicle.
