Well after two plus years of not having the partime/ 4 low light on the dash, I finally got around to replacing it. Mostly out of boredom, partially because who knows what other ill effect it might have on some other random part in the jeep.

The install was pretty easy. Disconnect the sensor cable from the sensor. Use a large wrench or cresent wrench and manuever it into postion on top of the transfer case to losen. Unscrew the the old sensor, thread in the new one. I snugged it down just past hand tight. Hook sensor cables back up. And done. All in all maybe 20 minutes worth of time. Hardest part was getting wrench to turn in such a confined space.

Afterwards, I made sure light was on and ran through the gears. NOW I have some strange noises coming from the thing though. When I shift P-R-N-D no noise, but on reverse to park I get a grinding type noise. Also the shifting between part-nuetral-low and back through is a bit rough.

Does anybody have any ideas were to start troubleshooting, other than taking it back apart? I only moved a few feet in the drive way while testing it. Maybe need more driving or shifting to get fluid onto the gears? I dont think i could have overtightened the sensor when I put it back in....

Thanks for the help in advance.

Mike

You may not have it tight enough or to tight. That sensor must be torqued to 15-25lbs-ft.

Hmmm, very interesting, yesterday morning I was using 4 Hi to pull out of my driveway onto the street (jeep warmed up for 15 mins before I moved) and when I went to shift back to 2 wheel drive (6-speed manual tranny, sport trim level) the transfer case selector stuck a little, I dipped the clutch, finished the shift, and the light stayed on.

Now it's backwards: the part time light is on while I'm in 2wd, and off when I am in 4hi or 4 low?

Weird.

I can tell that the t'case selector still works, but the light is now backwards?

sounds like the sensor is on it way out, if not already. That's more or less what mine did too. It has happened to quite a few people on here. As I posted earlier, I ran mine for a few years with out any problems. Just felt like replacing it.

Troy, thanks, i'll see if i can figure out if it's too tight. It seemed to work better yesterday after i drove it a bit and shifted the lever a few times.
