There's a bunch of these for sale on ebay. The claim that they increase gas mileage and horse power by chaneling the air intake. Is this total bullsh@t or what? Here's what the auction states: What is the Power Maxx?: The Power Maxx is a stationary vortex generator that fits inside your air intake tube. How it works: The Power Maxx produces a vortex, effect in the combustion chamber of your engine. This allows for better atomization of your fuel, resulting in more complete combustion of the available fuel. By enhancing fuel atomization, the Power Maxx increases horsepower and fuel economy. Lab tests conducted by the EPA on non-moving vortex generators showed results as high as 20 horsepower and 24% increases in mileage. Other independent studies yielded results as high as 35 HP and 31% MPG. Although results varied from vehicle to vehicle, there were gains across the board, and considering the price, ease of install, and maintenance free operation, the Power Maxx is a worthwhile investment. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Better-G ... 1520QQrdZ1 |

My 2 pennies: It's not "WHAT." Must be the former. I have, however, met people that swear by those things and insist that they increase horsepower. Of those that purchase the "technology," I know some that end up with problems due to airflow inconsistencies created by the vortex. Purchase from reputable manufacturer (check out their website and read lots of reviews). And purchase at your own risk. Good luck. |

Well, actually, technically speaking.... they are a bunch of horse patooey! (Quote taken from Sherman Potter) The great big giant throttle valve butterfly interrupts any "vortex" effect that might possibly be introduced inline prior by these snake oil devices. Also, the manifold itself from there on in is designed to create a certain volitization of the air on it's own. And on our particular vehicles the fuel needing atomization is not even introduced into the path until just before the valve chamber. Somewhere there is a guy kicking back with a big cigar laughing his butt off! Incidentally, I have seen where these might have been effective in that they were too big to properly fit into a restricted air tube on an intake. They actually stretched open the air tube and "theoretically" made the intake system a little more free flowing by expanding the bottleneck area! LOL -Adam |
