So I was on my way home from a friends house and I was doing 55 and some guy in an Ford Explorer decided to try and pass me.....well I tryed to match him and let him not get over  BUTTTTTTT I clicked the O/D off and got to 6000RPM's and about 70mph AND IT WOULDNT SHIFT!!!!! I pass people all the time and I usually dont hit the O/D off and I hit about 75-80 and it shifts, now it didnt shift and it kinda freaked me out.

Anybody have any ideas what it could have been, like if it was my stupid idea to hit the O/D?

was your transmission at it's normal operating temp? meaning had you been driving for awhile?

1st order of buisness.. you just killed a kitten.

and about the transmission, why would you turn off the overdrive? i beleive overdrive is the final gear that you were trying to shift into... the reason for the off button is when you are towing, and the overdrive ratio is too high to handle the extra load. and if you didnt know, and overdrive gear is just a gear selection were the drive gear is smaller than the driven gear.

well usually when you turn O/D off your rpm's go longer (for towing) to get your speed up. and I was trying to get my speed going so the F****r couldnt pass me.

he was trying to shift back into 3rd, 6k rpm at 70 is 2nd gear, 3rd at 70 is 4kish more or less

are you saying it didnt shift back to 3rd when you lifted off the skinny pedal a bit?

shifts are crisper with the OD off and the TqC is a bit lazy with it on, the quicker shifts is probably what he was aiming for

yea you basically explained it all. But I lifted off the pedal when he got infront of me and I turned the O/D off right as I let go of the gas.

i'm a tad confused but i dont think it's all your fault, lets get everything straight

you were driving a jeep

took off o/d and floored it or something close to it

it downshifted to 2nd , rpms hit 6kish

he got infront of you and you lifted off the gas , turned OD back on and it didn't shift to 3rd or OD?

or are you saying, prior to lifting off the gas, with it floored it wasn't shifting to 3rd?

i typically stroke the pedal back to 3/4ths or so at 5500ish for the shift from 2nd to 3rd and then ease back in to about 4/5ths gradually until i'm past the point where it will downshift

the 3.7, atleast with the 3.73 has about 1k worth of fairly useless rpm prior to redline and at those speeds it may have been having trouble reaching the shiftpoint at 100% throttle

can you clarify any?

The most obvious explanation is that kicking off o/d put your tranny into third, and with o/d off there was no where else for the tranny to go????

After he got infront of me I just let go of the gas and turn the O/D back on and everything was perfectly normal after that.

ah ok i understand now, i think your jeep was just having trouble reaching the 2nd to 3rd shift point, you just needed to back off the skinny pedal a bit for it to shift :P

First off...You let a Ford Explorer beat you seriously?? Man you need to drop in a New Air Filter and get you a Flowmaster 40 with duals.. Hell I was keeping up with my Dad's 07 5.7L Dodge 1500 Hemi until I hit the speed limiter.. I eat mustangs and explorers for brunch now the fun part is trying to get a diesel powerstroke to race you and let them pass you at over 100mph and a Highway Patrol is right there watching him and gives him a ticket :-)r

You guys are wierd :? I rarely take mine over 65mph even in a 70 zone. When I'm in my jeep it's all about taking my time and enjoying the drive, at 70 I get horrid mpg and 5mph doesn't do squat between 65 and 75 on what time I get there
