I used a glass-mounted UHF antenna on a pickup truck I had once. It did fine for short range communication. For long range, it required me to flip up the power to the highest setting (50 watts on my radio) and then there was too much radiation floating around inside the cab with me and I got a headache and sickness in my stomach. So I had to turn it back down a bit. LOL. The problem is, with the glass-mounted antenna, the radiating element is INSIDE the cab, so it cuts efficiency and makes it more dangerous for the user. But yeah, just for short range communication it did fine. Hope this helps...

Hey Fouros, sorry for the late post - I just noticed this one. I have used a glass-mount V/UHF antenna for my ham radio for the past 5 years with no problems. I can routinely hit a repeater 100km away with 5 watts, but it probably helps that the repeater is located at 3300 meters (I think thoser conversion values are correct - 60 miles and 10,000 feet). The main suggestion I have is to make sure the antenna base is centered as well as possible over the interior coupler; at these frequencies any offset can really affect your SWRs. Hope this helps.
