I’ve been working with PML http://www.yourcovers.com in building an aluminum transmission pan for the Jeep Liberty 42RLE. I have sent them pictures and other information to help assist them with the design. Our goal is to make the transmission pan work with the OE skid plate. So far, here is the information that I have:

The price range will be from $210 - $230 dollars in the as-cast finish. The aluminum trany pan will include mounting hardware, magnetic drain plug, and a boss for a temp sensor.

For obvious reasons, PML is wanting to make sure that there is a market for the aluminum transmission pan. I would like to know how many of you at sometime or another would buy a transmission pan as described above and at the price listed above. The design process has already started.

The advantages of an Aluminum Transmission Pan.

1. A deeper pan will hold more fluid, thus providing more cooling
2. The Aluminum pan and fins would greatly reduce transmission temperatures
3. The magnetic drain plug would capture metal shavings, keeping your fluid clean
4. The drain plug would allow for easy drain intervals without having to remove the pan
5. A temperature sending unit would allow you to monitor transmission temperatures
6. Reducing trany temperatures would prolong the life of your transmission and trany fluid
7. Perfect for towing and off-roading

i recognise the benefits of aluminum.. but..

oh whatever, they don't make a vehicle thats all iron and forged like a old International harvester tractor anymore, i guess I'd give it a shot, I've yet to have a tranny temp problem, but I guess the one time I get marred in the sand and have to plug along for almost a mile with my friend walkin long behind me pushing to keep it moving like i did with my bronco II i'd be up **** creek

Actually, the aluminum pan would be much stronger than the stock pan, plus the aluminum pan would be covered by a skid plate so it wouldn’t be exposed anyway. Thanks for posting, I’ll be sure to keep track of those who are interested. In my personal opinion, it’s a good investment.

Is there any difference in the JK/TJ 42rle trans pan? If not, you Gotta get those money spenders on board w/ this sort of thing, then you might see some Big interest numbers. I would be interested but only if it is a stock capacity pan that doesn't sit lower than stock. I can't give up any space between my upcomng trans skid and pan.

i doubt it, i have heard of them before, im sure they are reputable. they were on spike tv too. it shows on their site that they make the pans for 45RFE and 545RFE, but it says deep, im not sure if it would fit above our tranny skid.

i would be VERY interested! my tranny pan is pretty rusty in a few spots on the outside of the pan, so i would need to upgrade my pan anyways

so yea, if it gives me enough clearance for the skid, not hair-line close, id buy one for sure!!! even if it was stock capacity i would be interested, for the drain plug, magnet, and tranny temp bung! becuase this summer im adding an external tranny cooler and a tranny temp gauge

dont quite get the benifits of an aluminum pan on an offroad vehicle, If it is not broken ,dont fixit. If you have no cooling issues why change it? leave it alone. If the pan was out in the open I would say the cooling fins would be benificial, but the full skid plate .. if you have one, covers the pan anyway so what is the benifit. More fluid.. capacity? it will take longer for the fluid to reach max temp, but after a while 12gt of fluid will get just as hot as 8, not trying to be negative just weighing out the benifits.

more fluid helps it cool, only so much fluid can go through the system at one time, so it gives it more time to cool, or something in that nature ;)

David Tolin is the designer, fabricator, and owner of PML. He is highly respected in his area of work. As of right now, David is thinking that the transmission pan might be ¾ inch deeper than stock, resulting with an extra holding capacity of approximately one quart. Obviously, David wants to make the pan shallow to allow room for the OE skid plate. Just to give you some ideas, you can see below that we have plenty of room under the OE skid plate.

well according to eureka boys link it looks like the pan is not gonna fit unless i put spacers in there and then loose ground clearance. plus i dont have OEM skids I have either the All J's or super skid under there.......

I never had the kind of clearance you show in your pic. Not sure if I had 3/4". Since my pan and skid are crushed now, I will replace the skid with and aftermarket. Since the one PML already offers definitely will not fit and the aluminum one is only an idea, I'll have to replace it with OEM.

Tranny pan is same on JK for 42RLE. The alum pan is a great idea except I can buy 25 metal ones for $230. I just bought a pan and magnet for $8.84 from Mopar Wholesale.

I'm interested but don't count on me since finances can be a little screwy sometimes. I'll keep track of this and possibly sometime down the road (maybe 2-3 years) I'll possibly purchase one. Sorry I can't be more solid on purchasing one but just trying to be honest.
