I've searched both using the search function and manually without finding a answer so I will ask here.

I have 84,000 miles on my gas 3.7 2002 KJ. Is it time to change the timing belt? - Thanks.

I don't have the manual with me but I'm pretty sure it says to do it at 60,000.

There is no timing belt. There are chains.

I haven't taken one apart; I hear it is complex.

There is a primary chain driven from the crankshaft to an idler shaft, which in turn drives the overhead camshaft in each head with a secondary chain, and a counterbalance shaft.

I hate timing belts.

I checked my owners manual and the service manual. The owners manual says to replace the Drive Belt at 45,000 miles, which is the serpentine belt on the front of the engine that connects the water pump, power steering pump and everything else up there. A timing belt is only found on the diesel KJs.

If this is what you are talking about, then this is a very simple job.

CRDs are not the only KJs to have a timing belt...the 2.4L KJs also have one.

I wouldn't bother replacing a t-chain until it started making noise.

IIRC book time is 3.5 hours.

Which is a far cry from the 11.7 hours that it wants to replace all 4 timing chains in an OHC Ford 4.0

I typically change timing chains between 180,000 - 200,000 on any vehicle I own. I figure by then they are ready to be changed. I’ve never had one go bad on me.

The 3.7 and 4.7 use 3 timing chains. The plastic tensioners will wearout way before they will and the tensioners ussually have been lasting 175,000-200,000 miles so far on 4.7's.

I’ve heard that dirty oil can wear out chains faster. Make sure you use good oil, change oil as recommended, and always use the best filter medias.
