| Post subject: | Heating Issue 03 Renny |
Ok here is my first issue. I'm not sure if this is standard with the libby or not. When i turn on the heat there is barely no difference between the 1 & 2 settings. 3 & 4 are fine and you can notice the difference in the amount of hot air pushed out. Basically having it on 2 is like having no heat on at all. Also switchin between settings (floor, windshield , etc.) it is delayed. My KJ is under warranty so if anything is wrong with the heating I know it will be covered. The Dealership said thats normal and the KJ Computer is slow changing. But I call bullpoop.. Anyone shed some light on this for me? I just need some insight before I take it to another dealership. Thanks |

I sure someone else will chime in. However I believe it sounds like the resistor is bad. Its behind the glove box I believe. |

The lack of change in speed between settings 1 & 2 would indicate a problem with the resistor block - it's a $25-ish unit that can be DIY'd pretty simply. More information can be found in this thread. The delay when changing between vent settings is common with a vacuum controlled system. It's happened in other vehicles that I've owned and is nothing to be worried about (unless it doesn't work at all). |

What about having heat on the 2 settings. Do any of you guys notice a difference between 1 & 2? |

Yeah, there should be a small difference between the 1 and 2 settings on the fan speed. Changing out the resistor block will get you back to "normal" for under $20.00 |

There's quite a bit of difference between 2 & 3, more than between 1 & 2. Although in setting 2 you should have a noticeable amount of air moving through, enough to defrost but just not as fast. I've always found setting 1 was a bit too low, even when the KJ was new. |

I still have air on 2 but like you said 1 is too weak. I always have mine on 3 becuase its cold as crap here so i gotta stay warm. I just thought it was normal and didnt think anything of it till this thread. |

Hey Liberty Renegade, I have an '03 as well. Since it was new, settings 1 & 2 are very low, however there is a discernible difference between the fan speeds. If you put it on 1 and place your hand underneath the dash to feel the air blowing out, you should feel it blowing a little harder when you select 2. Neither setting is very loud and you really can't hear it if you have your radio turned up. I rarely use 3 or 4 simply because I don't like the air noise. It takes a little longer to heat the cabin, but I don't mind. There is a delay as well, which is normal. When you switch from floor or vent to one of the other settings such as floor and defrost or floor and vent, you are actually starting the air conditioning condenser and it takes a couple of seconds for the relays to switch over and the condenser to get up to speed. When you do this, you'll notice a very small drop in power and might feel a little "hitch" if you have cruise activated. Perfectly normal. |

What savageurge said. I don't have a renny, but my KJ works the same as he said. I personally like the very low, to ludicrous speed option. The delay is aggravating but normal due to the fact that these aren't the old days any more. Used to be you would have a lever that was a bit hard to move and that would mechanically and instantly change vent settings. Now I I don't know if they run off a vacuum or electricity. |
