Just curious if anyone has had this issue. Mainly when the jeep is cold and I back out of my driveway and then put the vehicle in drive it take are second or two for the transmission to actually go into drive, not only that but it does it with a thud and makes the whole vehicle sort of "jump" forward. I also have an issue sometimes if I come to a stop while driving (doesnt matter if the vehicle is cold or warmed up) I will just be sitting at a stop and get the same "jump" forward even w/ my foot on the brake, the jeep doesn't actually roll forward but sort of jerks. I have taken it to the dealer and of course they cant duplicate the problem! Any sugestions? I currently have 47k and have had ALL the service work done at the dealer and on time.

I own a CRD, but the 3.7L uses a 4 speed version of that same trans. There were a bad batch of filters with no check valves to prevent the fluid from draining back into the pan. You most likely don't have one of the bad filters but yours could have gone bad. Do your home work and see if your 3.7L has two filters like the CRD does. I used a Wix when I put on my big PML pan mod.

Good Luck

Interesting. FYI I just had my 30K service done (obviously about 17K ago @ the dealer) and they did a tranny fluid/filter change. I have had this issue though from day 1! I bought the jeep w/ 8k miles. I originally figured it was just the nature of the transmission but it seems to be getting worse which is why I am posting about it.

he has a 2005 which is a completely different transmission than what the crd uses. only the earlier '02's and some '03's have the relative transmission of the crd. his tranny only has 1 filter.

Not normal. My previous car was doing that just before I got the Liberty. The transmission on that car was definitely going out.

Have them check the linkages, computer fluid level and type.

I've done an exhaustive internet search and found that this is a fairly common problem. Dealers know about it yet refuse to acknowledge there is a problem. Is there anyone else on this site w/ similar problems? The tranny isnt going "out" it doesnt slip at all and runs/shifts fine except when stated above.

Its no wonder the "big three" are going in the hole! I also own a Lexus and I'll tell you what, Chrysler isnt even in the same universe when it comes to customer service and standing behind their vehicles. Dont get me wrong, I still love my jeep I just hate how dealers/corprate play dumb about major issues they are having with their vehicles. Thank God they at least owned up to their ball joint problems.

Every 45RFE/545RFE vehicle I've driven has done it to some extent, depending on mileage. Rams, Dakotas, Durangos, KJs. My KJ does it, and I'm assured by a Chrysler tech with several years of experience that it's 100% normal

I had this issue after i put a "pro king" tranny filter in my tranny, after going to the dealer getting the OE filter !AND O-RING! replacing the garbage filter and filling it back up it works like new. Sounds to me either the filter is bad (new doesn't always mean good) they forgot the o-ring, or the fluid is low. The tranny still acts sluggish when its cold, but thats common. I would bring it to the dealer and tell them the issue, or take it in your own hands and make sure its done right.

Thats probably what I'm going to do. Crappy thing is I take it to the best chrysler/dodge/jeep dealer/service center in AZ and they are possibly still not doing it right? I'm just frustrated! There is no way someone can tell me this is "normal", to me thats just a cop out. Thanks guys for all your input, if I find a fix I will let you all know.

I have the same issues but like you said only when cold and not warmed up. I have recently had the transmission fluid and pumped changed so I don’t think that’s part of the issue.

It’ll happen when you shift from P, N or R into D. Or the same is also true when shifting from P,N or D into R. If you notice before the Jeep is warmed up the RPM’s are above 1,000 to help the engine warm up a bit. When you shift into any gear from P or N at this engine speed and you’re not moving or changing direction there will be a little jerk as the engine speed is forced to slow down to match the vehicle speed. The simple way to fix that is just the Jeep warm up a bit longer.

If you listen carefully you can actually hear what sounds like an electric motor engage the gear in the transmission. When my Jeep is not fully warmed up I wait until I hear that sound so I know it’s engaged before I give it any extra gas.

Bodz.

If your talking about Cherokees, not grands, with the 4.0L six they used Asin AW4 transmissions. But if they had the 4 cylinder the later ones anyway were Chrysler's "finest" I recently bought a 00 Cherokee with 145,000 and didn't give the mileage a second thought  But on my CRD it's the only thing I've ever bought a extended warranty on

My problem is not so much the hard engageing into drive when the vehicle is cold as it is the feeling im being rear ended when Im at a stop at a light or something. Every once in a while the jeep just kinda jumps or bucks no matter if its cold or not when I'm at a complete stop w/ my foot on the brake.

That is an odd issue and it does sound like something is wrong. Unfortunately I don’t have any answers. :( Hopefully next time it happens you’ll be near the dealer and can have them meet your outside to check it out.

Only other Chrysler product I've had was a 10yr old Cherokee 4.0 with about 80,000 miles. Only trany issue I had was it slipping out of OD on the highway - sold it after that b/c I only had $4.70 in the bank. Seriously, I could even get the money from an ATM

I had the same problem but after adding another half quart of tranny fluid the problem went away. I was not checking the level when it was at the proper temp and I left it slightly low. Maybe you could double check your fluid level. Good luck.
