I'm curious about something and I bet you guys know the answer. What are the differences between the North American Liberty and the one sold in Europe? Here's what I've figured out so far.

The European Libby has;
- the Cherokee badge & trim
- the CRD engine (are they even available with a gas engine?)
- the radio antenna whip is replaced by an intergrated on in a rear quarter panel window (nice idea)
- there are turn signal marker lights on the side of the fenders
- the license plate has been moved from the bumper to a hard shell spare tire cover
- the rear tailights have foglamps ???

Also I know that the North American Liberty's are assembled in Toledo, Ohio. Where are the European "Cherokee's" assembled?

Don't forget the mileage and speedometer is in metric in Europe as it is in Canada.

I've been in the southern Netherlands for the past two weeks and I've yet to see a "Cherokee" (AKA the NA Liberty) on the highways. I have seen a couple of the older Cherokee's (the XJ) and even a Wagoneer. I haven't even seen a CJ/YJ/TJ or a JK on the highways. Yesterday I visited a local Chrysler dealership to see their lineup of Jeep's. It was quite odd to see the CRD tag on the back of a JK.

This is an interesting used 04 Cherokee that I saw. From the front it appears identical to my Libby but that Cherokee badge on the side looks odd. It's a CRD with a manual transmission and the price was sixteen thousand Euros. I wonder how much that would be in Cdn dollars :D

Oh yeah, now I see why there's a totally different way of mounting the license plate on European vehicles, the long license plates.

It took me a while to find the radio antenna. I'd like this option on my Libby.

According to the brochures & posters I read the European Liberty badged as a Cherokee was sold in Europe between 2001 & 2007 so I imagine that it will no longer be sold there at all. I did see an 09 Dodge Nitro on the floor and to be truthful it's almost identical to the NA Liberty.

LOL, Also use liters of fuel rather than gallons!!

Also daytime running lights are common in Canada and Europe I think.

They're still made here in the states. Back in '04 I was in a very large storage lot in the Port of Baltimore to do condition reports on 170+ new Dodge Dakotas that were heading to the middle east. I did some poking around and found a group of Jeeps enroute to Europe. While the KJs were ready to go, there was a line of TJs with no flares. The on-site shop was installing the Euro flares, bumper and license plate conversions. The Jeeps had been shipped to the port minus these items bolt on parts. The "Cherokees" were already done by the time I saw them. If you look at a TJ parts book, in the front bumper section you will see the front bumper end caps aren't just the plastic jugs that we get. The end had a intergrated filler to eliminate the space between the bumper and the fender, no gap below the turnsignal. The repeater light (side turn signal) for the TJ replaces the stock side marker in the flare and has a rounded face to allow it to stick out. I took some pictures while I was there. Unfortunatly I never got them off of the floppy discs, now I have no way to look at them.

We do not get that in Europe. And 16.000€ is US$ 20.230 or CAD$ 25.576. That's pretty normal over there or here, hence why you do not see to many around :D

Some more:

- our headlight units are different
- our lightbulbs are different
- we do have fog lights L&R on the rear
- we have two extra reflectors in the rear bumper
- ALL are 4x4
- we got 3 headrests in the rear
- we got 2 headrests in the front, so no bucket seats
- ALL CRD's came with 4.10 gears and trac-lock diff

What about the KJ's in South America? Did we ever determine if some of them have steel differentials in the front and what country if they do?

Hmmmm...I'd like a set of sturdier axles, then I wouldn't be afraid of lockers.

A lot of US vehicle nameplates do not follow them out of the counrty. Prime example would be the '97-'06 Wrangler, they are called "TJ"s in Canada. Some names have a United States implication that might not go over so well elsewhere. I've been told that the "Wrangler" name was used on a different vehicle up north, but I'm not sure.

Looking back at some later 60's car photos, I recall seeing a Canadian GM "A" body that looked largely like a Chevelle. There were Pontiac tail lights and interior ect. It carried a brand name that I do not recall. Another thing that happened was using out of date body tooling/molds in other countries. A Chrysler product that we knew here in the US as a 1967 Dart would show up in Brazil as a 1975/78 Charger or Magnum. Sure lots of differences, but the same body.

I was thinking that Brazil was the one with the steel D-30a. I do know that Dana does/did have a plant down there. I'll have to see if I can find someone down there.

Yah, there all Libertys here, don't know where you saw a cherokee after 02 up here. Maybe a import (wierd) or a rebrand?
