Post subject:  I hope i made the right choice......

Almost a year ago i had brought a 2005 Jeep liberty which currently has 47,000 miles on it in which it has rode well for me so far besides the little annoy things like tailgate rattle and this metal tapping metal sound under my drivers seat whenever i go over bumps. I tried fixing it with duck tape to where the sound may be coming from by putting it on different prices of metal under my seat but it still did not work :P, other than that no other serious problems. When i seaching for a new car it came down to two vehicles, which was obvousely Jeep Liberty or a Hyundia Santa Fe. The reaserch that i had done on the Santa Fe was very good, its was great reliable SUV with no serious problems, the jeep liberty was very good as well. But i worry a little bit now becuase i have it in my head that once an American Car starts to get over 100,000 miles everything starts to go down hill and problems start to occur. With Forgien cars i say to myself that they can go on almost forever with out much problems and feel that they are alot better quality than american cars. Sometimes i second guess myself that i should have gotten the Hyundia, dont get me wrong, the liberty i have right now is a great jeep but i just worry that problems will start to occur once i start getting over that 100,000 mark. I just hope that i had made the right choice in getting a liberty.

Don't worry about the Liberty.

There are plenty of members here with vehicles above the 150K mile mark and still have no major mechanical issues with their vehicles.

The liberty is a great vehicle that should hit 200K miles no problem.

every vehicle has it's parts that start going bad every 60-100k miles, when you know what those parts are and have a lil spare time it makes it nice because the parts don't fail because you've replaced them before they started giving trouble

belt tensioners for instance, that one took about 5 minutes and went on with a new belt too just for peace of mind

Are you familiar with Hyundai's history? You will find a company that was considered the worst out there. They claim that they are much better now, but if you are looking to past performance to judge future performce, Hyundai is a fail.

I won't even begin to go into the American company bit. People have to make their own decisions about helping out our economy to the greatest degree possible instead of Korea or Japan's.

As for the Liberty vs Santa Fe... I'd say you made the right choice. And if you're not mechanically inclined, get to know the people here close to you.

Enjoy!

in all fairness i think hyundai's varied more on a model to model basis as far as quality was concerned over the years, some of the models were straight lemonaid, some of them were small chunks of gold that wouldn't stop running no matter how bad you treated it, i think the same kinda goes for the american vehicles from time to time

side comment.. i was watchin a movie last night on HBO2 , yeah i know i think it was in spanish, was an old val kilmer movie based around hte WW2 era, reminded me of hogans heros in a way, anyway it took me a bout a hour of halfawake watching it and halfawake forum reading to realise that it was a comedy

anyhoo.. at some point the nazi's were chasing them across some field, and one of the guys whips out a tompson and chugs a few rounds at the german truck which blows a tire and bursts into flames... the next cut scene shows it barreling across the field to a previously unseen red ford pinto.. it comes bounding to a stop in a comedic slow motion sequence and *PLINK* taps the bumper and the car explodes in a ball of fire killing the nazi's and the guys jumped into the german truck still on fire and drive away making the comment that the germans sure made great vehicles

I just thought i'd add that.. sorry

I remember seeing that scene but i don't remember the movie title itself. My Dad and I died laughing during that scene.

I've got 180,000+ miles on my 2002 Limited. I drive more than 25,000 miles a year, and I plan to keep this one well past the 200,000 mark. Things that have broken: valve spring, A/C compressor, alternator, radiator, passenger-side power seat motor. The valve spring is the only one of those that I'd consider a major repair, although the seat motor was dang expensive. I think the rest is pretty typical for a high mileage vehicle.

Well from turning wrenches for sometime and have worked on a varied vehicles I can say from personal experience a vehicle is only as good as the upkeep with the maintenance.Every vehicle, made in Japan or the US,is junk, well can be if you don't keep it up.For most people there vehicle is there 1st/2nd largest investment and it's amazing that 90% don't care about it and then get pissed off when they get that $2000 repair bill.I've worked on '08's that are is sad shape, more leaks then you can count and basically no junk, both American made and Japan made.European made is the worst  .I've also worked on both American made and Japan made vehicles with over 200,000miles on them and they look like they just rolled of the showroom floor.Of course when you come into my shop for just a oil change I look over your vehicle and try to sell you needed maintenance(I only recommend needed services),hey it's how I make my living, but I can tell by how the vehicle looks(inside and out and under the hood) if it is even worth my time looking deeper then dropping the oil and changing the filter.I do take a chance time to time and it never fails if the vehicle has not been maintained then the owner does not care less.Basically keep up on the maintenance stuff, don't let leaks and broken stuff go un-fixed for long(major components like the engine/tranny) and any vehicle will last some time.Japan made vehicles have never and will never be any better then American made vehicles, both break and both have major issues. So far the Liberty has been a very good running little Jeep, sure problems will occur and that is due to a little thing called mass production and happens to all vehicles.

i agree about you comments tjkj2002. if you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you.

also, my liberty has 108k miles on it and i have no plans or worries about it.

i recently sold my 89 325i bmw with about 325k miles on it for 2100 bucks after owning it for 5 years and buying it with only 200k miles on it for 1500. i raced it in the scca DSP class for two years and it was my daily driver at that time. i also had an 88 chevy pick up that was one of my dad's plumbing company trucks that we got rid of with 800k miles on it. we drove it from texas to north carolina towing a trailer and it was a great truck. i had an isuzu trooper2 with 200ish k miles on it when i got rid of it.
i normally am uncomfortable buying a car with less then 100k because you never know if it is going to have problems at that mark because it is time to replace some things at that time.

i also fix vehicles for a living. these vehicles just happen to have blades and turbine engines for propulsion instead of wheels and reciprocating engines. same purpose though, get from point a to point b safely

I worked with a fellow that had a Hyundai and in our job we put on 30-40k miles a year. The hyundai was always getting something replaced under his 100k warranty. He said that for his/our use it was pure junk but for his father-in law who didn't drive near as much it was fine  For that use I always had good service from VW diesel powered cars

As tjkj2002 states no car is better then the service it getts  Treat a caddy like junk and it will be  Treat a pinto with respect and it will treat you right

My Liberty has 67,000 with zero problems and my Cherokee has 264,000 and its still driven daily with
the biggest issue being a clutch replacement at 180,000.

Maintenance is the key to longevity.

Maintenance is one of my strong points. I sometimes go overboard which isn’t always the most economical in the short run, but I figure going overboard on maintenance ensures the best possible chances for longevity and less down time for unnecessary repairs. I use the best oils/lubricants and I follow the most strictest guidelines when it comes to maintenance intervals. I also make sure that anything broke, leaking, or wore out gets repaired or replaced. I agree with tjkj2002, maintenance is the key to anything. I also agree that your vehicles is a major investment and I’m amazed by how many people buy, sell, and trade them like they're baseball cards. I’d say more people spend the majority of their money on vehicles then they do their homes in a lifetime.
