| Post subject: | Strip bolt on transfer case |
In my attempt to change my transfer case fluid I managed to strip out the fill bolt. Good think I still have all the fluid in the transfer case due to lesson learned on my buddies Bronco years ago. In any case can anyone give me some advice on how to remove the 10mm hex head fill bolt from the transfer case? |

sounds like you need an extractor set, i'd def see if you could get a large allen type fill plug to replace it, i hate hexes |

same thing happened to me but it was done at one of those quick lube places where they check all your oil levels. I think those hex nuts are a bad idea. I still haven't gotten mine out yet but somebody posted there is a napa bolt replacement that you can get. I wish i could find that part number. Maybe someone will chime in here. |

Actually I try to replace hex or Allen type screws when ever I can. And that was exactly was I was doing after I removed it. The thing is in their really tight, it looks like it might have some sort of compound/adhesive. I need to get it removed and I doubt if a screw extractor would actually get the job done, it’s a pretty big bolt. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It’s starting to bug me |

well while Im not the sharpest tool in the shed I would probably find a bolt and try to weld it to the stuck bolt. |

You could try a bolt extractor. Or just take it to a mechanic who has the tools. Warning: If you use a bolt extractor make sure you use one large enough that it doesn't break off inside the bolt making a bad situation much worse. |

jsc's comment is an option too, i've had to do that a few times but a welder isn't always handy |

I just use that as a last resort, but I did have to do it this morning on my CJ. |

I’m so freaking relief I was able to remove the stupid grub screw off my transfer case. I did not need to buy a huge screw extractor. I put a bit of heat on it, hammered in the 10MM and slowly turned it. It was confirmed it did have some adhesive on the threads. |

When I changed mine 2 weeks ago (looks around) I don't think it had ever been changed before, or it had been an excessivly long time the stuff was blacker than a crayon but I didn't find any metal, but i did find some very fine almost graphiteish stuff but no heavy metals gonna drain it again this weekend since i've driven it about 600 miles since, figurued it's had enough time to circulate and get some more crud out |
