| Post subject: | Important Info Everyone should see: |
First of all, I want to state that this is not a personal attack. Instead this is factual info that is useful to all future possible customers and hopefully the owner of the company. Now I know the following may anger many, but if you have a problem with it, please PM me. I don't mean or want this to turn into a bash session or flame war in any way, shape or form, I only want to share my personal experience and some of what others have told me directly. So with that said, let’s get down to business. As most of you know, Marty, aka Rock Lizard , is the sole owner of Rock Lizard Fab. Marty is only one of a hand full of fabricators that produces products for the KJ. Now, when most of the past fabricators have flaked out on customers, they have been grilled and roasted on here. Usually it ends up with a mod or admin shutting it down after the 23rd page. Please, please don't allow that to happen here. Marty is a great guy and has produced some of the most sought after KJ products any have seen, but after 3 years of issues I think that something like this needs to be addressed and discussed with the public since most on this board either refuse to face the truth or don't realize it. Back in September of 2007, I was contacted by Marty to be the "test monkey" for his KK product line. Of course I said yes, and from that point on was the start of a rocky business relationship. So far I have logged 6 trips to RL in a year with 3 months of idle time in 07 before we could meet and just recently 3 months of idle without any contact from him. The first few trips were purely for test fitting of preexisting products and for measurements which any test monkey could possibly expect. One of those trips was wasted do to Marty double booking. The last few trips consisted of 3 roof rack fittings and a lift install. In a year and a half, all I have to show is a set of sliders and a joint project with JBA to produce a 4 inch lift. Even at that, the "joint" venture has all but broken up due to communication issues with Marty to Marlin. I have been driving around with an incomplete lift because of this. I will however say that Marlin at JBA is one of the best people I have ever had the pleasure to talk with. With a 40 minute phone call today, I was able to get more information to Marlin than Marty has been able to relay in the past 3 months and because of that I should have the lift complete within 2 weeks. Now, I know fabrication takes time, but the amount of time Marty has had to produce products is beyond substantial. On my last trip down there, we failed at finishing the roof rack due to the steel yard cutting the cross bars to short which is not Marty's fault. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, however I have been waiting for 3 months and have not had my PM's answered by Marty with the exception of once this week, in which I was informed that he had obtained the steel "a while ago" but I had to initiate contact. This shouldn't be a surprise since I know of customers that have been waiting 2 years or more for products. JHCrash's customers waited around a year. On the flip side of things, I will recognize that Marty did go through some hard and troubling personal times, but in the end Marty has shown that he hasn't been able to break the cycle of repeated let downs and push backs, a cycle that has lasted for the past 3 years. So with that little bit of history out there for everyone to understand, I will now proceed with caution. In the past, the KJ community has had many companies come and go with the most recent loss being JHCRASH. If you don't remember him, he required full payment for his front bumpers before he began production. After he made quite a few sales from this web site, he disappeared and broke off contact with his customers. After a flame fest on LOST, he returned and to my knowledge has fulfilled all of the orders he took and all customers have received their bumpers. Now in my eyes, I have trouble differentiating between RL and JHCRASH. Recently Marty made a thread about a sale that he was having which read, “This sale will save you some money, help me get this business back up and running since you are my individual investors as I mentioned in my off topic thread. And I am motivated to get these orders filled ASAP, otherwise I have to start paying money back”... “Prepaid orders paid in full except shipping, are on the prepaid waiting list, meaning you get your bumper in the order that it was received, so other prepaid orders ahead of you get theirs first of course, then when those prepaid orders are filled, the unpaid waiting list orders are filled next.” These are statements that I find very interesting to say the least. If Marty was serious about this, my roof rack would be done and a few other member's front bumpers would also be done already. However, Marty has chosen to bypass this system and in the mean time, produce unknown quantities of sliders, roof racks and a hand full of rear bumpers for customers that have placed orders after myself and the others mentioned. A perfect example of this would be the RL shipment to Australia. The order was placed on Feb 19, 2009 and completed and shipped by Mar 1, 2009. Now if I understand the ordering system correctly, should I not have received my products before this order went out since I paid back in Dec of 2007? Also, there have been remarks about not having time to fill orders, yet he is able to squeeze in two lift installs in one day. I haven’t heard of any one getting their bumpers and yet these other project seem to take priority. By now you are probably tired of reading this, so I will end it here. I understand somewhat why certain things have taken priority over others, and it is mainly money, time, and family. I try and see things from many different angles, and from what I have seen, there are a lot of cracks and bugs in the ongoing system. Even so, Marty has the potential to turn his business in to something bigger than can possibly be imagined. I simply think it is very important for everyone to see the reality of how things truly are and for everyone to not be blind to the fact that things aren't what they really seem. I wish nothing but the best for Marty and Rock Lizard Fabrications and hope that this spurs a change in how things are run and handled there. Hopefully now he can get those products out to those customers who paid their hard earned cash and placed their trust in him to follow through. Good luck and thank you for your time |

The Gospel according to ThunderbirdJunkie He is getting the high profit margin stuff out of the way. The stuff that the tooling (or whatever) is already done for. Of course the NEW products are going to have to take a back burner. In my industry, I will use a common example. Two customers drop off their trucks at the same time, with open-ended pickup times. One for an oil change One for upper and lower balljoints, tie rod ends, a steering box, and an alignment. Which one takes priority? The one that makes you money. If Marty made you a concrete promise of when everything would be finished, then yes, he is in the wrong. However, if it was an "It'll get done when it gets done" agreement, then it is nobody's fault, simply the economies of scale (HAHA, I just used a scale pun referring to Rock Lizard!) At first, I'll be honest. I read this and thought "doo doo NAH BRAH, I ain't buyin no skinkin sliders from him" Then I really thought about it. You cannot fault the guy. He has to make sure his business survives NOW before he can look toward the future. I am positive stuff will get done. Sometimes timeframes get pushed back. I cannot imagine trying to run a shop like his, and IMO even CONSIDERING giving anything resembling a time frame in his business frightens the doo doo out of me. It seriously makes my mind want to crawl down my spine and hide behind my diaphragm. No, not that one, sickos. Either way, it is really not HIS responsibility to do Marlin's R&D for him. A lift install with air tools takes 2 hours when you know exactly what it entails. One with open variables can take months. Especially when those open variables involve manufacturer/supplier issues. So Sayeth ThunderbirdJunkie Amen. |

Marty did a fine job on my sliders and was actually a little ahead of schedule on delivery. I have no problem with him or his work. |

I wasn't going to post but.....you know me.... First I can understand the frustration you have Digger and you have a right to be somewhat. From a business background Tbird is right on, I have started and sold 3 businesses so far in my life, and each one was the same , if you could make a quick buck today to keep the lights on you did that and worked on the items that took longer when you could. MOst times at midnight or two in the morning! Granted maybe somethings have taken a bunch longer but in the end it comes down to business decisions I am sure, I need 50 dollars today so which do I do, something I can get out the door this afternoon or a rack for a KK that may or may not sell right away. I have only bought one item from Marty so far but it was shipped fast , communication was great and I was well pleased with the final product. |

Since I was one of the lifts you refer to ("Also, there have been remarks about not having time to fill orders, yet he is able to squeeze in two lift installs in one day.") I just thought I would point out that I coordinated over 2 years ago to have Marty install my lift around this time. This lift was purchased from Marty (along with a few other items) and part of the purchase order was the install. I just thought you would like to know the facts. |

KW AV8R, I know that you have been waiting a long time for your stuff... I think your kit was the one that was fitted to my KK in the beginning tommudd, I under stand how and why a business operates, but to leave some one hanging for 3 months is a little out of line. I know that the only real interest on the KK side has been rails, but when you have paid for a product, well TBJ, profit is profit. For the product that he puts out, I think it is reasonable. heck, steel isn't cheap out here right now. As far as the deal between him and marlin, I don't know. How ever I was depending on him to get the info out to him since Marty was and has been the middle man for marlin with the 4 inch kits. Now, I will admit I could have probably tried again to talk to Marty before I posted this, but to night kinda sucked and I let my anger get the best of me... A dodge neon was smoking crack and tried to play bumper cars with my dads truck, then tried to run. Only problem was the dude was pitted by my dad at 30 mph and went in to the curb and couldn't get very far. Oh and for once, a cop was around when it happened. Like the mirrior?
So, I will drop Marty a phone call in the morning since I missed his call tonight. |

I'm not asking you to see it my way. I am simply giving my point of view. I also have no clue what his deal is between Marlin and him...perhaps I should not have said that it is not his job to do R&D on Marlin's lifts. However, I will also say that sometimes you need to burn bridges to cross elsewhere |

The issue at hand is taking money in advance and not delivering a product in return. It is one thing to delay products that are coming out because they make or may not sell, but do not take someone's money if you are going to continue to develop and delay that products release for something ridiculous like 1, 2 or 3 years. If Marty is still developing prioducts, why is he taking full price in advance on products that no one knows when they will be finished? That business makes no sense to me. If Marty needs to finish a set of rails or install a lift that he knows can be done before a more complex order, then he can bang that out and then continue on the complex order, but if you are going to take someone's money in full up front, then you have already made your money and a product needs to be delivered in a reasonable time frame not measured in years or several months for that matter. |

In a business you have to be able to develop a product, take orders, and most important delivery the product within reasonable time period. |

Business is business... he is very hard to get a hold of, but I think that is because he is working his stupid off on making products. I know how you feel though... my RL products took a long time to get to me, but once I received them, I forgot all about the wait! |

I wasn't going to jump in here because I've done absolutely zero business with Marty and don't feel it's my place. But, I think you two are missing the point. Of course you received you're products quick and on time, you ordered parts that were in production. This is exactly what Digger is saying. He's been bumped multiple times for orders that were easier for Marty to take care of. Now I'm not siding with Digger here, for all I know his story is complete BS and Marty has told him something other then what he's said. Marty could be in the wrong 100%, I don't know I won't pick sides. You guys pointed out exactly what Digger is trying to say though. He's ordered and paid for his product and he waits on the sidelines as other orders are filled. Ok, I'm done.. Thanks for coming! |

Nobody here can have a greater beef than me as for wait times. Nobody. I have the longest wait of anyone. I, on the other hand, also have a bit of bias, advantage, and thankfulness towards RL/Marty. I will stay out of this one. I do think the subject line is a bit much over the top though. |

Kudos Digger Nothing impress' me more than an articulate and emotionally tempered, well thought out post. If nothing else it may help people to be realistic about their future purchases and time frames for work. If/when I have the $$$ RL is seriously in the running to do my work and I live thousands of miles away. (of course my Mom lives in Co so that is why I could justify the trip). I for one appreciate having this info. and at the same time it does not turn me off of RL. Cheers All, |

To post publicly about this is wrong. As a mod, he does LOST a dis-service as Marty has been a long standing supporter. Digger just ask for your money back or something. I am guessing this gets locked in 3. |

Digger may be a mod but he is also a paying customer. He has every right to voice his experience just as much as you. People can argue all day long about the similarities and differences between RL and JHC and it isn't a stretch to see either side. |
