Post subject:  Aux transmission cooler - suggestions?

So help me out b/c I can’t really find what will work best. So far I think I have at least 14” W x 10” H x 1” D. It seems the limiting factor in front of the radiator is the hood release latch so maybe it’s really ¾” of room for thickness.

Should I go with a tube and fine design? A stacked plate design? I’m not really sure if there is a real difference between the two. I’d like to go with the best but I’m also looking to stay below $100.

Recommendations wanted…

The best way to cool the trans in a KJ is to get a '02 radiator with the integrated trans cooler.Modifying the trans cooler lines is needed(not hard) then run that to a AUX cooler. That is the best setup since the radiator will control temp spikes in the trans which a stand alone trans cooler can not do alone and is what is used in all KJ's with the 42RLE trans. The KJ's with the 45RFE have the trans cooler in the radiator,I have added a 28,000lbs GVWR AUX trans cooler in line the in-radiator cooler.

Though a little more then a $100.

I’ve read your response to the same question before and wish I could do that but… if someone wasn’t going to replace the radiator and get an aux transmission cooler what’s the next best option? Also, what’s the largest size I can get? How much room is really up front? Can I go 1.5” or am I limited to ¾” thick?

I used a stacked style and have even pryed small pebbles out of it with no leaks. The stacked are very strong.
I believe it is 13 x 11 inches. Stacked also lets thin application go into play- 3/4" thick. This is the one we install in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.
I install these things as part of my job and my CRD involved a major job as I trimmed quite of plastic mainly to get proper position and work with the stock (and huge) electric fan up there.
The best place to install is in front of everything and to splice into the return line to trans as aux coolers are designed to add that final cooling after all designed/stock cooling do their thing. Mine is even partly over that electric fan. You are wise to add aux trans fluid cooling.
This cooler is performing to keep that 545RFE in line and I think I am still on my stock DC TC at almost 70K miles cause of this install.Fluid is changed every 30K. And no studders or shakes or hard/misshifts.

Anyway this is what I did FWIW. I hope your project goes well.

Thanks guys, I'll go with a 1.5" thick one if I can. One more question. You've got me thinking about the '02 radiator and cooling system... If you ordered the tow package on an KJ that the 42RLE how did they set them up? Did they just do what I'm planning on doing and simply add on an auxiliary transmission cooler in front of the radiator or is it connected to part of the thermostat in some way? I'm asking this now so I don't end up thinking I can haul 5,000 lbs and find out the hard way I was wrong. I'm under the impression that if I add a transmission cooler as well as a steering pump cooler it'd be the same as having the two package. Correct or incorrect?

They also added a heavy duty Fan set up and shrouding.

See this post http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=36793

They have the parts numbers, web links and other info...

OK so the one I'm looking to get is a B&M Supper Cooler Universal and Race Cooler.

The Size is 11"(L) x 5-3/4"(W) x 1-1/2"(H)
It has 3/4" NPT fittings
It's rated at 14,400BTU's
It's black and they want $78.95 for it.
SKU 2344875
Part # 70264

LPD’ or Low Pressure Drop feature includes two bypass channels nearest the fittings to allow fluid to flow freely especially when cold to prevent lube system failure.

It's getting shipped out tomorrow so if I made the wrong choice let me know today.

The biggest tranny cooler you can fit is your best bet. Stock coolers are a joke. The dealership doesn't want you to have an aux tranny cooler because then your tranny won't die and you won't be looking for a new vehicle!!

I put a cooler on every automajic tranny I own. Biggest one that will fit. The wifes KJ got a 3/4" thick one...biggest one at the store!! It is kinda tight up there but I made it fit. Get ready to be creative. Installing a tranny cooler saves so much time and money and headaches!

Any liberty with a 42rle has a transmission cooler and its halfway decent. Of course a bigger one would be better.

Stock is never good enough, espeically once you start beating on it!! Auto trannies die from heat. Protect them from excessive heat by installing more cooler than you think you need. Low speeds, not much air going through the radiator, slow speeds and high loads create a ton of heat and make it hard to go away when wheeling. Go as big as you can!
