I realize its a good idea to have a spare key hidden on the outside of your vehicle while traveling, especially in remote areas. Does anyone have any suggestions for products, placement, mounting etc? Thanks!

While I think this is a decent idea, you dont have anywhere to put keys while you're towing or have a recovery point in the hitch receiver. If I was out on a rugged trail, I would have my clevis in the receiver all the time. So, where does the spare key go then?

Since yours isn't a new one with the key/FOB as one unit, go have a copy made out of a FLAT key blank. Then tuck it in your wallet. Then don't leave your wallet in the car.

I used one of those magnetic key holders pictured above, only I threw away the magnet, drilled a hole through the holder, and bolted it to one of the pre-threaded holes where the trailer hitch receiver is supposed to go.

That's actually a really good idea

I think I'm going to have to do that now

I have a non-programmed key blank hidden away. even if someone finds it, they can only open the doors, but can't drive away with my KJ.

I've seen this discussion before and the best idea I have heard yet is one member's idea. He has a non-programmed zip tied outside the vehicle and then a programmed spare VERY well hidden inside the vehicle.

In the past, I had a friend that used a key pouch with a Velcro closure and extreme Velcro holding it to the frame rail. He vacuum sealed the key in plastic and then put it in the pouch. He bonded the Velcro to the frame rail with epoxy instead of using the adhesive that it came with. He drove that truck 280k miles after that and the pouch never did fall off. He locked himself out at a restaurant after wheeling in the rain all day one time. He actually had to scrape away the mud to get the pouch detached! He cut open the plastic pouch and got right in.

This is what I did with my spare key.

I welded it to the rear wheel well frame

If you have light covers (Renegade lights), see if it fits in there. Preferably roof lights and not bumper lights.

Bury the key (in a baggie) somewhere close when out camping/hiking/whatever (leaving a folded note to self taped to shifter to remember to go get it before you leave (no location left on it - in case someone breaks in).

If you have a tranny skid, glue that metal key case (shown above with a magnet) to the inside of the tranny skid.

I was going to place one of those magnetic cases under the front bumper of the wfie's Libby, buuuut everything is freaking plastic under there!!!!!! I just use some mechanics wires and wire a non prog up under there somewhere.
We did have one of those magnet cases under our S10 blazer...never fell off, still there now that my sister drives it.

I was talking to a guy once that worked for a lock smith. His job was unlocking cars when people lock their keys in. He said he has done a ton of cars where people used the magnetic boxes and they fell off. His suggestion was wire a blank cut key somewhere. Sounds good to me. BTW, he charges $90.00 to unlock a door!
