Post subject:  Trailer lights problem

I have a question about my trailer lights. First off I have none. So I checked the trailer wiring and I did find a wire that was almost broke so I fixed that, still no lights. Then I bought a test light and started poking around. I poked into my round electrical connector for the trailer, no power in there at all. I checked my manual to see what fuse its tied to, i think it said 19 on the inside panel. Pulled it out and it was fine. So now I'm stuck with no idea on how to check or where.

Can anyone give me some guidance or suggestions? Thanks.

Do you have the stock Jeep trailer wiring or some after market stuff that plugs into the stock tail lights?

First you'll have to check the vehicle (which is what you are doing)

Question #1: Do the running lights on the KJ come on when you have the head lights on? Get a fuse tester and test every single fuse in the fuse box - the owners manual does not properly line up with the fuse panel layout.

Question #2: Have you tried a different 7pin-to-4pin adaptor? Sometimes certain adaptors will not work (it depends on how the vehicle is wired)

Question #3: Have you tired the trailer lights on another vehicle? Are they known to operate properly or is there a short in the wiring somewhere?

#1 The running lights work fine on the jeep. I will check all the fuses this afternoon.

#2 I can't light up my test light before or after the adapter.

#3 The trail came from a friend who said the lights did work. I'm thinking of trying my jeep on another trailer just to see.

A few years ago I was towing my trailer and the lights on my dash went dark after I plugged in a trailer (not this one) and it was because a fuse blew. Don't know how they are related but maybe another fuse went out this time. Thanks for the help.

PS: Should I be able to get my test light to light up by placing it in the 7 way connector?

Is the harness on the Trailer a 4pin?

If so - plug in your adaptor and then line up the connections to the diagram listed on the flip cover to the trailer harness plug. It'll show you where the 12V+ and GND terminals are. From there, you should be able to pull 12Vdc on a multimeter (buy one if you don't have one. they are only $20)

If you get 12Vdc, than the harness is working normally. I imagine it is since this is a factory wiring job.

The next step will be figuring out the wiring on the trailer.

P.S. The lights on the dash went dead because they are tied into the passenger side running lights. So when you blew that fuse, the dash lights and running lights go out along with half of the trailer lights.

If all of your running lights are working than the trailer harness should have power. which again leads me to believe that we have to figure out your trailer harness setup. [what color are the wires from left to right on the harness?]

Well it boiled down to me not knowing much about wiring a trailer. When I received the trailer the lights were bolted to the metal frame. The lights are now suspended off the wood deck and the lights only have two wires coming out. So that means the bolts from the rear of the light were acting as the ground so long as they made contact with the trailer. I fixed the problem now though, ran a wire from the bolts suspending the lights to a bolt going through the frame and then there was light, lol.

Thanks for the help.
