I have a red top about a year old and next week will be installing dual battery box. They will be wired parrellel charging together. Can I combine a Yellow top with a Red top? The yellow top is more of a deep cycle of course and red more toward stock. I have a lot of accesories (lights, winch, amps, ect )and think the yellow would be better but would like to only buy one battery for now and get another yellow down the road when budget a little better or ...do I have to buy another red top to match?? Thanks for input.

way bad idea to mix different types of batteries in a single charging system. The two types of batts have different internal resistance. Since electronis will flow the path of least resistance the charge rates will not be equal. Equal is good.

charging resistance makes sense, so i assume the "lower" resistance would get most of the charge. What about wired seperate with an isolater switch? of course guages would be needed to monitor both batts and you have to remember to switch from batt to batt..JL Rockie..i have to agree equel is good. $175 for a batt is alot cheaper than charge system meltdown. thanks for the help. would like to see a pic of dual alt setup..sounds sweet.

The answer is yes , if you switch them, and charge them individualy, and use them individually, other applications will need the same exact battery right down to the brand.

Seems to me that you want 2 reds anyway for this purpose, not 2 yellows. As I understand it, "deep cycle" batteries are designed to better handle alternating periods of discharge, recharge, etc, where the discharge phase REGULARLY uses up a major portion (50-100%) of the available charge. Even with all your accessories, I don't think you'll often drop below 80% on two red tops in most trail riding situations.

Here's my setup in Fulltimer's thread.Only difference is that I replaced the red with a yellow.Works great. This is my third setup like this(jeep,56&85 ford picups) with all sorts of battery configurations.
