Speedo is not functioning properly. Trip down (Chicago to St. Louis) it was hopping back & forth between 65-80mph though i manually maintained about 73mph. Today on the way back to Chicago it got much worse hopping back & forth but decreasing the range as i drove until it was hopping from about 0-15mph though still maintaining around 70mph manually. At this point the engine began cutting out intermittently (almost as though burping).

It does fine short trips around town but seems to act up after about 1/2hr on the highway. My guess is speed sensor is bad. i identified one on the rear dif and checked at O'Reilly Auto for a replacement. They showed the part but said i have to go direct to DC to get the part (at which point i decide to go back to St. Louis rather than test my luck all the way to Chicago).

i believe there are 2 speed sensors for the '04, six speed, 3.7L?

Where is the other sensor? Any other thoughts on diagnosing the problem?

As always TIA!

I have taken the wires apart on one ( back on the rear diff) and spliced them back together and it worked until it could be repaired correctly, may try looking at it and see if wires are broken or frayed

One speed sensor on your '04(plus no six speeds in '04,only 5-speeds) and it's on the rear diff pumpkin.Make sure you check the wires that are inside the connector itself, that's where mine was bad.If the wires are bad in the connector itself you'd not see it untill you pull them out of the connector, real pain to fix also.

That's what i say but everyone i talk to calls it a 6 speed as though they're counting the reverse gear. Seems dumb to me but when i say 5 speed they give me a look like . . .

Anyway, thanx for your response and clarification on the sensor. It's presently pouring here and i'm parked on my parents sloped drive so will have to wait til' tomorrow to check.
