I wouldn't trust anything consumer reports says or does, they report in favor of who pays them the most money(that's how they make there money). They think a rav4 is better offroad then a Wrangler Rubicon, take it with a grain of salt.

I think that the people at CR are smoking crack. They just need to stick to their lab coats and out of the garage. I change my oil every 3000 religiously with Valvoline synthetic blend and Wix filters and I dont care what anyone says, I'm not changing my mind.

My guess is that the cost for doing this 2 year study was paid for by oil company money. That would make their conclusions suspect.

I was recently reading an article about test results they did about the chemical levels in fruit and veggies. They advised that children should be restricted on the amount they eat. It turns out that they received $370,000 in grant money for that study from 2 groups that are in the organic food business. At om them.the very least it would be a conflict of interest to take the earmarked money for that particular study.

Consumers Union/Reports is a nonprofit organization. It's operating cost have to be very high and the money for all this has to come from somewhere. I suppose that if company X gives you $100K and you give a bad report on their product, chances are that would be the last time you get money from them.

What is Your end goal? Are you trying to justify what oil or oil change interval you use?

Best bet is to spend the money on some used oil analysis so you can determine what is best for Your particular application. You can try a sample at 3K or 5K, and higher and see when they suggest changing the oil.
With modern engines higher OCI's are fine in most applications to 5K miles and beyond if air filtration is good and quality oils and filters are used.
If you want to extend your OCI then you should probably use premium full synthetics and higher end filtration or a bypass filtration system. Is doing so Better than just changing oil and filters more frequently? Only you can answer that based on your own feelings about it. Personally, I prefer to enjoy my vehicles instead of working on them all the time. I feel perfectly comfortable w/ higher OCI's and have peace of mind knowing I am running the best products.

I feel the old 3k oil change is a waste. Sure thats Fine if that is what floats your boat and I could care less what people do in that regard but it is my HO on the subject backed by plenty of real world testing, etc. You can find plenty of info on BITOG to back that up using many different oils and filter combos.

I use Castrol or Mobil 1 every 5,000 miles or so. I’ve always thought of synthetic as a waste of $$.

To start with, I have two Classic Mini's. (One 1976 and a 1979) not that BMW Bimi crap, but real Mini's!
The engine oil is shared with the manual transmission(and automatic if you are lucky. And yes, plain old 10w30 or 20w50 engine oil lubricating both engine and transmission!)
I have always changed my oil in every vehicle at 5000+ miles!
Even in my Mini's!

Now, I am about to use fully synthetic Shell engine oil and Wix oil filter in our KJ.
I'll change the oil after 7000 or 8000 miles.
As far as I am concerned, changing your engines oil at 3000 miles is just a waste of money.
Thats why oil companies and automotive manufactures want you to change it so soon, to make money!

Yeah, I'm into wasting money too. I've used only Castrol full syn in a varity of vehicles for years.

I have been using Amsoil since I got the KJ back in 04. I have upped my change interval over the years to 7500 miles or 6 months, which ever comes first. I also send out a sample collected during the oil change to Oil Analyzers to test to make sure nothing is going bad in the engine.

I change my oil with full syn every 6,000 miles. Have done since new and now there is over 97,000 miles. She still purrs like a kitten and I haven't had to put a dime into the Jeep other than standard maintenance items. I also use Seafoam in the crankase, oil and gas every 30,000 and Lucas fuel system treatment in the gas tank every few fill-ups.
